Valjan's second novel in the Roma trilogy finds Alabaster Black, a covert government analyst, in Boston on the run from a mysterious assassin. Valjan's latest quickly picks up from where the author's last novel, the intricately plotted speleological thriller Roma,Underground (2012) left off: Alabaster Black has reclaimed her place in the covert government agency known as "Rendition," though she's far from trusting them completely. While embroiling herself in the scientific affairs of a dubious pharmaceutical technology company owned by the wealthy Cyril Sargent, she realizes that the past she left behind in Rome has not been fully forgotten. Again, Valjan successfully conflates multiple sophisticated narratives that bring the past and present together, which the archaeological theme of the last novel also helps accomplish. Old friends and love interests, as well as Mafiosi and Bulgarian hit men, infuse this novel with vital excitement and suspense. Black is a capable heroine and a good balance against an overabundance of Italian machismo and Irish-American testosterone. Though often aided by stereotypical "intuition," Black's decision-making process isn't patronizing, especially since her intuition is more than a mystical feminine feeling; it's actually rooted in levelheaded logic. Although Valjan proves himself to be a capable writer, some of the novel's many twists and turns fall flat due to too much foreshadowing. Also, some details become bothersome and superfluous; in a crime thriller, intricacy is essential, but some details, such as a paragraph-long description of a cellphone powering up, are glaringly unnecessary. That said, the many diverging storylines come together quickly, and the mood and pace remain consistent throughout this thrilling page-turner. Black is back and just as entertaining as ever.

Gabriel Valjan in his new book, “Wasp’s Nest” Book Two in the Roma Series published by Winter Goose Publishing gives us another adventure with Alabaster Black. From the back cover: In the highly anticipated sequel to Roma, Underground, Bianca returns to the U.S. for her former employer, the covert organization Rendition, to investigate Cyril Sargent and Nasonia Pharmaceutical. Although ambivalent about the assignment and uneasy about her online “friend,” Loki, she is enticed into researching what Sargent is doing with insect genetics that might upset the world of cancer research and treatment. Old friends Farrugia and Gennaro uncover a twisted conspiracy from their past and join Bianca in Boston where they will experience conflicted loyalties, question allies, and confront uncertain enemies, as they’re drawn into the wasp’s nest. Alabaster has returned to Boston and is back in the good graces of Rendition. Now she is using her forensic accountant skills to investigate Nasonia Pharmaceutical. I do not usually say that a book is chilling but let me say that this one certainly is. The stories you hear about what these Pharmaceutical companies do is enough to give you nightmares. What Nasonia does will creep you out forever. That is how good a writer Mr. Valjan is. She is really up against it in this book as there is an assassin after her. Twists and turns, surprising secrets and insect-based genetics used to develop a new cancer-cure are just some of what Alabaster has to deal with. This is a thriller mystery that will keep you flipping pages as fast as you can read to keep up with what is going on. I was guessing until the very end. I am so looking forward to the next book in this series. Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from Italy Book Tours. I was not required to write a positive review. Action packed thriller. In this, the second book in the Roma Series, the story opens with Alabaster Black (alias Bianca Nerini) returning from Rome to Boston, Massachusetts, leaving behind her lover, Dante, and friends in Rome, Italy. Rendition, her employer, a covert U.S. agency, has persuaded her to infiltrate Nasonia Pharmaceuticals, a drug manufacturing company owned by Cyril Sargent. Nasonia, is working on a revolutionary new drug using insect-based genetics to develop a new cancer-cure and Rendition want to know more. Then, when Farrugia and Gennaro, her friends from the Rome, arrive in Boston for another reason, she discovers that leaving the past behind is not as simple as just getting on a plane; they bring some disturbing news for her, ghosts from the past have resurfaced... I found Wasp's Nest a compelling reading, action-packed and with intriguing characters. The plot had plenty of twists and turns, some surprising secrets, and it kept me on the edge of my seat, guessing until the very end. Gabriel Valjan includes a tantalising glimpse into Book 3 of the Roma Series, Threading the Needle which I had read first, but I realized that the author created each volume independent of each other.

Wasp’s Nest, the second book in the Roma series, is based in Boston, Massachusetts, and it was quite entertaining (sometimes challenging) figuring out which landmark Valjan was talking about. There are plenty of Red Sox, geographical, and idiosyncratic references and I am sure New Englanders will devour this book while solving the mysteries surrounding its characters. No doubt Valjan did his homework when researching biotechnologies and I have to admit that I learned a thing or two about wasps! This is a fast read with lots of fast moving situations. Most of the Roma Underground characters come back and the scent of love lingers in the air as Alabaster/Bianca shows us a softer side, but one of my “new” favorite characters in this book is a chef. There are quite a few interesting and sometimes scary turns in the book created by the new characters, who successfully added a touch of terror to the storyline. All in all, the second book of the Roma series is very exciting; it answers some of the lingering questions from Roma Underground and left me on a romantic cliffhanger.
