Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
In this addition to the "Elephant and Piggie" beginning reader series, Gerald insists that ball throwing is very serious business indeed, which requires practice and skill. He considers himself to be a good ball thrower and expects praise. He is willing to entertain the idea that his friend Piggie, with time and practice, might also be good at throwing a ball. Piggie on the other hand does not want to waste time in practice but leaps right in to give it his best try. Piggie stresses the fun aspect of throwing a ball and puts the happiest of constructions possible on everything that happens after he gives the ball a fling. While exciting and funny, it is easy to read and only a few words appear on most pages. When the text is somewhat longer, repetition is involved. The delightfully simple pictures add appeal. Three times this author/illustrator has had his work recognized by being named a Caldecott Honor book. Willems began his career on Sesame Street where he won six Emmy awards. Young readers will love serious Gerald and his enthusiastic friend Super Pig. Highly recommended. http://www.jointhesosbrigade.com. Reviewer: Phyllis J. Perry

    ANOTHER BIG HIT FOR MO

My 5 year old daughter loves the book. The first time she heard it is was read by Mo W. himself in one of the B&N stores. Now she wants me to read it to her using the same voices he did.

    I Also Recommend:

Great for moms and dads to read aloud and interact with their children as they read. "Again" is the word I hear after I read Mo Willems' selections to my preschool class.

I am a preschool teacher, and I have many of Mo Willems' books in my collection. My dear students often ask to read the stories again, to look at a page of illustrations again, and to discuss what happened and/or re-tell the story again. The stories are so well received because I can read them with flare and make them funny and poignant and give the characters a fine voice and tell a story with a lesson, too - a lesson that is well received because it is not preachy but is realistic and gives way to fine discussions.
Blessings will abound as you read the selections - simple phrasing, sweet photos, and room for lots of discussion and acting out as you read. I know you will hear the words "again", too after you have closed the book.

    Highly recommended

Mo Willems books are excellent for children learning to read. They are fun to read. I became aware if them at B&N storytime when I took my grandson.

I love this series. Great for adults and kids.

All of the piggie and gerald series are wonderful, creative and amusing. I particularly love the facial expressions. I use these in my lessons to help children learn to read faces and feelings.

    Mo, you did it again!

Another wonderful, funny story in the Piggy and Gerald saga. My grandbabies love it, my daughter (a pre-school teacher) loves it. An all around hit.

    Mo does it again!

I am a first grade teacher. My students and I love Mo Willems stories and haven't met a Piggie and Elephant book we didn't like. However, "Watch Me Throw the Ball!" is a triumph! Piggie's "can-do" spirit is adorable and inspiring. I hear the six year olds saying to each other "Be like Piggie!"
The story is lovely and the students find lots to talk about. There is always a scramble to grab it off the shelf at free time.
Thank you Mr. Willems for another terrific tale!
