Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Carolyn Mott Ford
The dangers of water pollution are many, and there are many factors which contribute to the problem. This book covers a great deal of information in simple and clear terms, including the difference between point and nonpoint pollution. Years ago, people gave no thought to where garbage and sewage eventually wound up, and factories discharged industrial pollution with abandon. There are now laws restricting such actions, including the Clean Water Act passed by the United States Congress in 1972. Kids are offered ways they can make a difference in the effort to clean the water. The book is part of the "Saving Our World." It is illustrated with photographs taken in a variety of places around the world. The main text is accompanied by "Eye-Openers," or sidebars highlighting specific facts, some of which are unusual or little known. One such passage highlights the influence of Rachel Carson's Silent Spring on the sparking of the environmental movement. "Question Time" boxes also appear throughout the book. Suggestions for further reading are provided. Reviewer: Carolyn Mott Ford
