Children's Literature - Amy S. Hansen
Part of the "Water Science" series, Webster explores hydropower and hydro-electricity. This is an even-handed book. She lists both the pros and cons of hydro-electricity: "Advantage: Water power does not cause pollution. Disadvantage: Building dams destroys the [nearby] environment and can cause flooding." It is also an information-filled book with good diagrams of a hydropower plant and a water turbine. Other topics covered include: water power around the world, hydroelectric dams and stored power, tidal power, and environmental issues. Most topics are covered on a two-page spread with many diagrams and photos. One of the last and best features of the series is a brief introduction of a professional in the field. In this case that means describing what kind of work a hydroelectric engineer does. Back matter includes a brief quiz, instructions on building a water wheel, a glossary, and an index. But there is more. These books have an online component. Using the book code printed inside the cover, readers can link to an online version of the book and a video, which in this case was very well made. If readers take advantage of the online component, the package will be very powerful. Reviewer: Amy S. Hansen
