More About This Book

Overview

After more than 40 years of planning, Naconiche Reservoir, in the Attoyac Bayou Watershed, was impounded on Oct. 6, 2008 for recreation and flood control. It is located 21 km (13 mi) northeast of the city of Nacogdoches, Texas. The Nacogdoches Soil and Water Conservation District in conjunction with the U.S. Department of Agriculture Natural Resource Conservation Service were the primary sponsors in developing the lake, along with the Nacogdoches County Commissioners' Court. At permanent pool elevation the reservoir should reach 106.1 m (348 ft), with a flood pool elevation potential of 108.8 m (357 ft). Naconiche Reservoir will inundate 6.4 km (4.0 mi) of the 30.6 km-long (19 mi) Naconiche Creek, and 4.5 km (2.8 mi) of Telesco Creek. Both spring-fed streams course through the Eocene Carrizo Sand and geologic Reklaw Formation. Nacogdoches County authorized a water quality study of the newly impounded reservoir for guidance in future reservoir management, particularly in regard to aquatic life and contact recreation. Potential factors that may affect Naconiche Reservoir include: geologic and soil characteristics, sediment deposition resulting from change in stream flow as the lake fills, agricultural runoff, oil drilling activities, and development. Three samples from six sites were assessed every 2-3 weeks from September 2008--October 29, 2009 in situ using the 6600V2-4 Multi-parameter Water Quality YSI Sonde, and grab samples were collected for lab analysis. Seasonal chlorophyll a and alkalinity measurements for these six sites indicate Naconiche Reservoir is a eutrophic, soft-water body. Apparent color and iron concentrations exceeded state and federal standards for aquatic life. On several occasion dissolved oxygen levels occurred below standards set for Attoyac Bayou Watershed. While some parameter levels are influenced by geology and/or vegetation, others are temporary results of reservoir impoundment and expected to normalize with time.
