Nappy Roots’ major label debut is a fast moving affair, stock full of sweet pop hooks and loaded down with an easy, good time feeling. Watermelon, Chicken &Gritz is a party album of a different sort, splitting the difference between the fat beats of the West Coast and the Dirty South’s gritty funk to carve out their own distinctive, high octane jams. The group’s six members met at Western Kentucky University—four are Kentucky natives—and make little secret of their southern roots. With all six members taking turns on the mike Nappy Roots keeps a rapid pace up, swerving through the 17 tracks here with effortless energy. Southern twang and drawl stand out on tracks like "Kentucky Mud" and the hit single "Awnaw," giving Chicken, Watermelon & Gritz a pleasant, down home feeling. While the sound here is refreshing, the lyrics rarely stand out and, after awhile, some of the tracks tend to blur together. Still is this fun, perfect for rolling down the road on a sunny day and guaranteed to get the party started. ~ Martin Woodside, All Music Guide

While OutKast lean leans towards mother-ship funk, this Kentucky-based sextet has more soul. [B]

A tight album for all occasions

Slick beats and great voices. Can drive around with this cd bumping without looking like a moron. For the most part every song is a winner, very little filler. Standouts include "My Ride", "Headz Up".and the intense swirling "One Forty"

    Nappy Roots Shines

In recent years, I can only recall Ashley Judd as a hotter product of the Kentucky Bluegrass than Nappy Roots. Watermelon, Chicken... is an exceptional album that introduces bucolic, southern living into an Outkast-like flow. The album, hardly cosmopolitan, gives you a respun taste of country life through quality beats and beyond average lyrics. This group puts together quality tracks similar to the much darker Outkast and almost as lyrically pleasing as former underground group, Jurassic 5. Watermelon Chicket & Gritz is a quality album that should be found on any rap lover's shelf.

From their last cd,''No Brush, No Fade, No Perm'' to their 1st commercially released debut album, ''Watermelon, Chicken, and Gritz'' these Kentucky's boys are on a roll!!! No Doubt!!

I'd just like to say that Nappy Roots are going to put Kentucky on the map!! Fa sho ya dig? I'm from B.G. and listened to some of their previous albums and tracks and they were off tha banger!!! Anyway, I love their new cd to death, everybody go out AND COP THAT!! The whole album is pure organic and fresh with rollicking beats and dynamic lyrical charisma all members bring to the album!! ''AWNAW'' '' BAllin On A Budget'' ''Headz Up'' and ''Contry BoyZ'' are just a few of my faves, If u like Oukast, then beware of these country boys cause they gonna shock the world, NO Doubt About IT!!

Dem boys from KY got it going on like the Col. Sanders

This group is combo of Wu-tang meets Outkast. Their sleek music will have you bopping your head for months till the next album drops. Aw Naw will be a national anthem within weeks. Check out their website and be part of the Nappy Roots following
