Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
“Each colourful chapter is easy to work through, with plenty of headings, patient case studies, diagrams and, where applicable, websites to gain further information”
Nursing Standard. July 16 :: vol 22 no 45 :: 2008
From The Critics
Reviewer: Betsy Frank, RN, PhD, ANEF (Indiana State University School of Nursing)
Description: This is a survey of important information that might be used in the general care of the adult patient. For more in-depth information, readers are referred to the appropriate pages in Physiology for Nursing Practice, 2nd edition, by Hinchliff et al. (W.B. Saunders, 1996).
Purpose: This book is an updated review of important topics in general nursing practice. Since the book presents many topics in survey form, most nurses would need to explore topics more in depth through the cross referencing to the more comprehensive book.
Audience: This book is intended to be used in the U.K. by novice nurses and nurses who are returning to work after a career break. Since the book presents a survey of many topics, it seems more appropriate for nurses who need to update their knowledge before returning to practice.
Features: Topics include an overview of the healthcare system in the U.K., concepts central to nursing practice such as grief and loss, and a system by system overview of common nursing problems encountered in adult health nursing. Case studies are presented in each chapter that introduces specific patient disorders. Important terms are bolded and essential information is outlined in list format within text boxes.
Assessment: Nurses in the U.K. who are returning to work should find this book to be a useful reference. Once those nurses choose their specific area of practice, they would want, however, to explore topics in more depth by using the cross-referencing information. Students or new graduates, on the other hand, would need a book such as Physiology for Nursing Practice, that offers more than an overview of important nursing care topics.
