Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal

Gr 4-6- In this sequel to Wind Tamer (Bloomsbury, 2006), 10-year-old Archie Stringweed is now an International Curse Exterminator (I.C.E.) and his services are needed when mysterious things start happening on the coast and in his hometown, Westervoe, Scotland. While fishing with his best mates, George and Sid, Archie hears an army marching underwater. He leans closer and sees two hypnotic eyes. Then everything goes black. Ruby, a new girl at school, claims to have seen a mermaid and that her father was killed by a cursed lion. Professor Himes at I.C.E. headquarters explains that defeating Huigor (the curse from the first book) left a black hole that is reactivating old curses and sending them toward Westervoe on a collision course. Only Archie, with the help of his curse-breaking artifacts, can stop them. The fantasy elements are original and fun, the British words and phrases will appeal to Harry Potter fans, and the final battle between the reactivated curses and Archie is exciting. His friends have more space and personality in this sequel, and Ruby adds a much-needed female character. The short chapters and quick plot pace will appeal to reluctant readers, particularly boys. The book's ending does not resolve every plotline; expect more sequels.-Samantha Larsen, West Jordan Public Library, UT

Kirkus Reviews
In the second episode of a probable four, Archie Stringweed, the young Curse Exterminator first awakened to his powers in Wind Tamer (2006), confronts a previous foe as well as another powerful escalation of "curse activity"-water-based this time-near the Scottish hamlet of Westervoe. That "activity" travels in weather-like storm fronts, which are powered by curse energy that only Archie, as a human lightning rod, can draw off. Though, as before, the climax is rousingly furious and titanic, the author takes her time getting there, trotting in an extended string of ominous portents as well as a large cast of magical creatures from original inventions like octopus-like Jellats and crab-like Glimpers to the odd giant fungus or talking seagull. Also, so confident and competent is Archie already that despite several manufactured crises, the issue is never in doubt; that doesn't bode well for subsequent entries in the series. Still, Morrison gives bad weather a whole new meaning, and avid fantasy readers may be drawn in. (Fantasy. 11-13)

Reviewed by Carrie Spellman for TeensReadToo.com

Archie Stringweed is now an official curse breaker -- he even has the medal from I.C.E. (International Curse Exterminators) to prove it. After defeating Huigor, Archie has the utmost confidence in himself. Unfortunately, his family is still treating him like a child. Archie is getting understandably frustrated with them, and it's making him behave a little bit recklessly. Especially now that strange things seem to be happening around Westervoe and Windy Edge. Again.

Archie hears the sound of an army marching over the sea, but how can an army march on water? Then there are the hypnotic eyes in the sea that keep trying to bring him closer, and the crazy sea gull that attacks him and his friends, the weird shadow in the classroom closet, and more icegulls. Archie knows there is a curse afoot, but no one seems to be willing to tell him anything at all. Archie is determined to help, whether they want him to or not.

This time, though, the curse might just be too much for all of them. This could be the curse to end all curses. Or, more accurately, the curse to bring back all curses, broken or not. All of I.C.E. and the entire Stringweed family is about to be put to the test, and Archie may be more necessary than anyone is prepared for.

There is a lot of information in this book. It still has all of the exciting elements of WIND TAMER as well as the characters that we got to know in that story. There are also a bunch of new characters, new monsters, and a whole host of new information about curse breaking. The story itself almost gets lost in the barrage of new information. I have a feeling, though, that this may turn out to be useful information. So pay attention because the end of the book makes it pretty clear that we haven't seen the end of Archie Stringweed.
