"The cozy, satisfying refrain, 'And that's the way I love you,' will easily spill off the page and into lap-sitters' dialogues with their own loved ones . . . the feathery, scribbly pastels exude an irrepressible joy that's very much in the puppy spirit."  —Booklist

"A triumph of simplicity in words and pictures, it is impossible not to be moved by this story." —Inspired by Savannah

Children's Literature
A little pig-tailed girl reiterates what she "loves" about her dog. The straightforward text has been expanded through the appealing and expressive loose-style illustrations created in a soft palette and outlined in black crayon. From sharing treats to sharing secrets; from playtime to bath time to bedtime, this young child and her dog are inseparable. It is no wonder for their friendship is strong and true. Caring, understanding and "the way you're always there" are characteristics of this friendship, and certainly any friendship worth having. Children who have a dog or long for a dog will relate to this book. This is perfect for preschool storytimes about friends or dogs. 2004, Simon & Schuster, Ages 3 to 7.
—Sharon Salluzzo
School Library Journal
PreS-As a smiling girl interacts with her enthusiastic pup, she describes her feelings for the dog: "I love-the way you always care,/the way you're always there./That's the way I love you." The engaging illustrations show the two friends sharing a variety of experiences: wearing crowns and having tea, playing with a tennis ball, snuggling together in a soft chair, and finally cuddled up at bedtime. Loose charcoal lines provide texture and motion, while splashes of pastel-hued watercolors keep the pictures warm and cozy. White backdrops and a minimum of detail encourage children to focus their attention on the characters. The girl, in her pink overalls and perky pigtails, and the brown pooch are both drawn with grace and expression. The simple language and clean, colorful artwork make this book just right for the youngest pet lovers.-Joy Fleishhacker, School Library Journal Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.

    Absolutely simple and touching

I boughtthis book when my daughter was about 5. She is now 7 and still loves this book....so does her 2 yr old sister. We have a 13 yr old dog and the story is so appropriate for how a little child (in the story a little girl) loves her dog and the special bond they share. It is simple and touching and reminds my girls of what a gift our dog is in our lives!!!
