Children's Literature - Children's Literature
Mother cat's little one wants to know why she loves him when he's naughty, as well as when he's good. It's not because he's smart and draws nice pictures, it's not because he's sometimes sweet to his sister, it's not because he brushes his teeth and doesn't let water splash all over the floor, or because he puts his toys away. No, the tale concludes, his mother loves him because that's the way mothers are. "I love you because you're mine," says the mother. Lasker's old-fashioned illustrations of the mother cat and her rambunctious child include some whimsical touches, such as copies of famous paintings and a feline Mount Rushmore, but the overall effect of story and pictures is nostalgic and sententious. "I love you," she answered, "because you are my little one, my very own child. From the moment you were born, I cared for you, and wanted what was best for you." For an antidote try Tomi Ungerer's No Kiss for Mother (1973). 2000 (orig. 1963), Albert Whitman, Ages 3 to 6, $14.95 and $6.95. Reviewer: Linnea Hendrickson

Schlein and Lasker come together for a new edition to celebrate their 1963 book's thirtieth anniversary. There are only minor revisions to the text; the story still captures the interaction between a mother cat and her young son, who wants to know why she loves him despite all the bad things he does. Mother makes it very clear. Neither the bad things nor the good things he does influence her love; "I love you because you're mine." The big change here is in the artwork. Formerly a mix of bold black-and-white and color, the pictures are now gentle watercolors with softened lines, presented in effective double-page spreads. Libraries that still own the original will want to replace it with this new, more attractive edition.
