Library Journal - Library Journal
Montgomery has written a highly literate, first-person fly-fishing book. His familiarity with fishing writers from Dame Juliana Berners to Ray Bergman is obvious, and he is not hesitant to take on any authority whose theories run counter to common experience. Unlike some specialized writers in the field, fishing for Montgomery isn't precisely an end in itself, but an entree into life. Thus topics like archaeology and his uncle's Alzheimer's condition find their way into these thoughtful, primarily Montana-based essays. ``Every year, fishing takes me farther from the River,'' Montgomery writes in conclusion to one of the most graceful and humane books on the subject in several years.-- David J. Panciera, Westerly P.L., R.I.
