Overview

Shipwrecked on the shore of Japan, twelve-year-old Jack Fletcher is wounded and alone. His father and the entire crew have been slaughtered by ninja pirates. Jack’s last remaining possession is his father’s rudder, an invaluable book of maps and notes about the world’s uncharted oceans. Masamoto-sama, one of Japan’s greatest samurai, rescues Jack, adopts him, and sends him to samurai school, where Jack will be trained in the Way of the Warrior. Will it be enough to help Jack defeat Dragon Eye, the ruthless ninja who is intent on stealing the rudder at any cost?

A perfect blend of culture and adventure.

I found this book to be both entertaining and informative. Mr. Bradford had the perfect balance, so that the book flowed. I can't wait to read the next book when it comes out in July. I even ordered the UK version so I didn't have to wait so long. If your interested in Japan and the Samurai, I highly recommend this book to all. Hard to put it down.

    Awesome book!!!

When I saw this at my local library, I thought it would be like the Five Ancestors series, which I didn't like at all. However, I got it and I instantly became absorbed in it, unable to set it down until I finished it. I couldn't believe how great this book was, especially for a first-time author. I'm biting my nails just waiting for the sequel to come out in 2010! How will I be able to stand the wait!!! You'll absolutely love this book.

    I Also Recommend:

    Insight into an ancient culture.

This is an outstanding middle school book. Chris Bradford's first novel is wonderful. His songwriting background shows in poetic descriptions of places, emotions and events. The story fits neatly into the 7th grade social science curriculum for Japan. But better than that, it offers an intersting view of the Japanesse culture through very accessible characters.

This book does for Japan that Blood Red Horse does for Islam.

    One of my Favorites

This book was very good. I loved the way that Chris took us back into 1700's Japan. It starts with a boy named Jack getting Shipwrecked on an unknown island. He is soon found by Masamoto, a famous samurai. That is all i will say. You need to read the book yourself. I highly recommend this book to teenagers and adults. it may not be appropriate for young readers because of some minor language used by the sailors. This book is highly recommended by me. Happy reading! :)

    I loved this book!

I really liked reading this book! It has high action and is addicting, and I think that Mr. Bradford did a great job of capturing Japanese culture. It's a great book to read for fun, and it will teach you a lot about Japan, too. I highly recommend it!

A young man shipwrecked in Japan and being raised as a Samurai. His journey is filled with excitement and adventure. Made me think of the first time I read Shogun.
