Editorial Reviews

VOYA - Ann Bouricius
Chelsea House's Ice Hockey Legends series is a good choice for libraries where hockey is popular. The series, which features current players such as Gretzky, Jagr, Messier, and Lindross, emphasizes the players' hockey records rather than their personal lives. Even the chronologies at the back of each book list little personal information, other than date of birth. Wilker tells how Gretzky, as a nine-year-old in a league known throughout Canada as a "hotbed for hockey talent," scored 196 goals and 120 assists in 76 games. Schabner writes of Jaromir Jagr coming to the United States to play for the Pittsburgh Penguins where his idol, Mario Lemieux, would be his teammate. The books presuppose some knowledge of hockey. Terms such as first line, blue line, crease, and hat trick are not explained, nor are they glossed. However, the young people who will be most attracted to these books will already be familiar with such terms. The black-and-white photography is of good to excellent quality and always adds to the excitement of the text. Most of the photographs are game action shots, such as Jagr being hooked by a member of the Islanders during the 1993 playoffs. At the end of each book is a table of statistics for that player. While titles in this series would not be the best books to give a student who needs a full biography of a sports figure, they would be an excellent choice for the kid who wants to read about great hockey players. Index. Illus. Charts. Further Reading. Chronology. VOYA Codes: 3Q 3P M J (Readable without serious defects, Will appeal with pushing, Middle School-defined as grades 6 to 8 and Junior High-defined as grades 7 to 9).
