Overview

Stephen Mansfield, an amnesiac former boxer, is desperately trying to put the pieces of his past back together. Along with his girlfriend, a pregnant prostitute named Fancy, he decides to leave his dilapidated New York apartment in search of anything that will help him remember who he is. Their world is changed almost immediately, however, when robbed by a band of marauders just outside of Cleveland. Forced to do what they must to survive, they find themselves on a violent, cross-country crime spree. While on the road and eluding a nationwide manhunt, Mansfield realizes they're not only traveling state to state but through time as well. From conversing with Timothy McVeigh the night before he blows up the Oklahoma City Federal Building, to running from Hurricane Katrina, to Mansfield actually being the second gunman on the grassy knoll, the two repeatedly find themselves in the midst of the most defining moments of the past sixty years. We Are Oblivion is a nihilistic journey of discovery and destruction. As Mansfield and Fancy travel through space and time they struggle to find love in a world in which they've never truly fit in. But as Fancy's belly swells, Mansfield's memory begins to return. And he wonders if Fancy, the only person he's ever fully trusted, can be trusted at all.

Meet the Author

Michael Sonbert, a New York born novelist, currently teaches English and composition to eighth grade students in South Philadelphia at Mastery Charter Schools, a nationally recognized leader in school turnarounds. His second novel, We Are Oblivion, a nihilistic journey of discovery and destruction, is due in stores May 2011 through Otherworld Publications.

Sonbert’s debut novel, The Never Enders, was released by New York publishing house, Brick Tower Press, in November 2008 to high praise and outstanding reader feedback. Daily Candy called The Never Enders, "a nonstop ride through a mental home." Chuck Palahniuk's official website, The Cult said, "Sonbert's voice is so authentically young…it brought to mind Bret Easton Ellis.” Daniel Alleva of Charged by the System called the book "...a sledgehammer to the psyche..." while Lauren Becker of Shooting Stars Magazine said, "Sonbert writes like a young Chuck Palahniuk."

Aside from writing novels, Sonbert also writes rock music as a lead singer and lyricist. His current band, Royal Slang, is presently in the studio writing songs for a debut record. His former band, The Never Enders, released its first album, Air Raid Romance, on Indianola Records (IndianolaRecords.com) in 2006, followed by Dance Party in Hell, released by Chamberlain Records (ChamberlainRecords.com) in 2008.

Sonbert is a member of two prominent New York writer groups, The Biggs and Voxvocis, and has performed at venues such as Bowery Poetry Club, KGB Bar, and Cornelia Street Café, where he has captivated audiences with his rapid-fire, high-energy performances. In addition, he recently ran a workshop intensive on the website, The Cult. The Never Enders novel is currently in talks to be adapted into a screenplay for film.

Stunning and Shocking - I Couldn't Put It Down

I've never written a review before, but Michael Sonbert deserves to be put up there with all the literary greats. The fact that he is a new, fairly unknown author only hinders him in that I couldn't buy his books at a store and had to order them online, but that won't hinder me from following all of his future works. As for the book, We Are Oblivion is an amazing head long rush into insanity. I couldn't put the book down and finished it as soon as I could. The story definitely stuck with me long after I was done. It is a dark, gritty, often disturbing, dazzling tale that kept me guessing until the very end. It's definitely not a story for everyone, but if you love (or can, to the very least, stomach) Chuck Palahniuk (my favorite author)then this is a story, I feel, that you simply cannot miss. Everyone should read this amazing story (though I know many would, sadly, struggle through it), and I know I will be coming back to it for years to come.
