Overview

Can a parent ever truly recover from the loss of a child? What if this child was forcibly taken away from you? How can these parents and families find resolution knowing that these loved ones were victims of violent crime?

In the American justice system, the prosecuted are allowed to speak in their own defense, but the murdered victims have no one to speak for them. The only time the court hears from the victim's side is through the family's impact statements at sentencing. When do these silenced voices get a chance to speak?

Patricia Goebel explains that We Are Their Voices. Whether it's contacting the prosecutor's office for news, holding candlelight vigils, attending grief counseling, or contributing to causes in the victim's honor, there is no one else and no one better qualified to be the voice of their murdered loved one.

This heart-rending compilation gives firsthand accounts from loved ones of homicide victims. Some of these victims were innocent bystanders, while the reason for others' murders will never be known for certain. These parents share their experiences with overcoming their grief while attempting to explain the flaws in the justice system with regard to homicide cases.

I bought this book because the topic really hits home for me. I lost my father a long time ago and his homicide was closed due to his past. The person who took his life literally got away with murder.

This book is quite moving as it tells the tragic stories of how loved ones feel when they have lost their family members to violent crimes. Those who have perished away are no longer able to speak for themselves so it is up to the family to be their voices. I don't think a parent can ever get over the loss of a child nor have I ever truly gotten over the loss of my dad. Especially when they have been wrongly taken away from us.

This book explains how the judicial system needs to be improved, especially when dealing with the laws surrounding the victim's rights. I think it should be a required read for those who are currently attending law school because it is a true eye opener. Readers can't help but to want to find ways to help those who have suffered because of the flaws in our court system.
