Children's Literature - Heather Christensen
Keesha's class is presnting a talent show and everyone will perform. Although Keesha has many interests, she is not thrilled about performing in front of an audience. Her best friend Pam helps her come up with a plan to tell a joke, but when they rehearse on stage, Keesha freezes up, unable to remember a thing. When Mrs. Carson suggests that Keesha help backstage, she jumps at the offer, and quickly shows that performances in front of and behind the curtain are equally valuable. This book in the "We Both Read" series is designed for two readers—ideally a parent and child—of differing abilities. Each side of the two page spread features text in different reading levels, but with some shared vocabulary. One word, highlighted with bold type, is featured on both pages, allowing the more accomplished reader to demonstrate the word before the beginning reader encounters it. A detailed parent introduction explains the concept of partnered reading and offers suggestions for making this experience successful. Johnson's expressive illustrations capture the exuberance of an elementary school talent show with hula hoops, magic tricks, and tap dancing. This is a nice selection for a shared reading experience for a parent and child. Reviewer: Heather Christensen
