Gr 13—Molly and her friend Abby can't wait to get to the Ruby Rose concert. Too bad they're depending on Molly's sister for a ride, because Sarah keeps running into bad luck. First the car breaks down, and then the concert tickets are unavailable because the credit card was left behind. Fortunately, and quite implausibly, their luck goes from bad to great when they end up backstage instead of in the audience. And things get even better when a favor they did earlier for a couple of strangers turns out to have unexpected and thoroughly delightful consequences. This entry in a series in which parents and children alternate reading sections of text may go over well with kids who are into pop stars and wish fulfillment. The artwork is colorful in a garish way and isn't much different from what you'd see on a greeting card. The whole package seems as ephemeral as Ruby Rose's fame probably will be, so buy only where the series is popular.—Lauralyn Persson, Wilmette Public Library, IL
Children's Literature - Dianne Ochiltree
A title in the "We Both Read" series, this lively and contemporary tale is aimed at beginning readers in Grades 1 and 2. Unlike many other step-into-reading stories, this book also invites the participation of the adults in an emergent reader's life: namely parents, grandparents, teachers and librarians. As this story opens, two tweens, Molly and her best friend Abby, plus a true teen, Molly's big sister, Sarah, are heading out to THE event of the year: teen idol Ruby Rose's concert. The girls' trip to the concert hall is delayed by stops to the store, car troubles and a slow taxi ride, but arrive they do....AFTER the concert has started. Worse, Sarah accidentally left the things needed to pick up their tickets in the broken-down car! But never fear, a kind couple and a series of funny events give the young Ruby Rose fans an even more exciting experience than just going to a concert. A fun read for young readers! The fluid, full-color illustrations perfectly capture the sparkle of a pre-teen girl's dreams. The shared reading concept featured is an innovation developed by education specialists. It invites adults to read the more complex text and story line on the left-hand pages. Young readers are meant to read the right-hand pages, which are written at the early reading level. A "talking parent" icon precedes the adult's text and a "talking child" icon precedes the beginning reader's text. More difficult words are printed in bold lettering so they can be pointed out and discussed, increasing a child's vocabulary. Reviewer: Dianne Ochiltree
