That's not to say the album is a return to The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway or Trick of the Tail. Indeed, while there are several extended pieces on the record, there is none of the eccentricities, odd meters, or extended virtuoso solos of the band's progressive heyday. The album's closer, "Fading Lights," comes the closest, featuring an outstanding instrumental mid-section. Unfortunately, the record also contains some gutless ballads and peons for world understanding that sound miles away from any immediacy. However, the surprisingly gritty singles "No Son of Mine," "Jesus He Knows Me," and "I Can't Dance" help make up for the album's weaker moments. [Rhino issued a CD/DVD edition in 2007.]

    The last Genesis album to feature Phil Collins.

    This was the last Genesis album to feature Phil Collins, since he replaced Peter Gabriel when he left to focus on his solo career, and Phil Collins replaced him, after his departure, and since Phil Collins took the lead vocal role, which resulted in the album A Trick of the Tail, which Phil Collins indeed made his debut, but then after Wind & Wuthering, and the live album Seconds Out was completed, guitarists Steve Hackett left Genesis to start on his solo career, so after his departure, Genesis became a trio, which resulted the title of their next album "and then there were three", which feature the number one hit, "Follow You Follow Me", but in 1980, Genesis released Duke which featured two number one hits "Misunderstanding" and "Turn It On Again", and the album also featured the song "Behind The Lines", which Phil Collins would do a remake of the song on his 1981 debut solo album Face Value which featured the hit "In The Air Tonight", the single "I Missed Again", and the album closer, which is a Beatle song called "Tomorrow Never Knows". After that was completed, he returned to Genesis for the album Abacab, which featured the hits, one being the album title track, and "No Reply At All", it also featured the singles "Keep It Dark" and "Man On The Corner". In 1983, Genesis released their self titled album which featured "That's All", "Illegal Alien", and "Taking It All Too Hard", and then in 1986 Genesis released Invisible Touch which feature the hits, "Tonight Tonight Tonight", the album title track, "Land of Confusion", "In Too Deep", and "Throwing It All Away", but the album also featured the single "Anything She Does", and now comes to this final chapter of the Phil Collins era, or so we thought, but as for this album, it features the hit songs like "No Son of Mine", "I Can't Dance", and "Hold On My Heart" in which being the last for the Phil Collins era of Genesis until 2007, which Phil Collins would return to Genesis for the VH1 Honors, and then they would go on a World Tour, but during the European portion of it, they would record a live album which is called Live Over Europe. As for this album, it's great from start to finish, and Phil Collins Genesis era fans, especially progressive rock fans would indeed enjoy this outstanding album.

    Best effort since 'Duke'

    'We Can't Dance' was the best Genesis album since 1980's 'Duke'. It incorporates all the traditional Genesis elements short, simple and precise songs like 'No Son Of Mine' as well as longer, more complex pieces like 'Driving The Last Spike'. Commercial pop as well as non-commercial, prog oriented material. Gritty, driving songs like 'I Can't Dance' as well as ballads like 'Hold On My Heart'. There is plenty of very good and high quality music being played by the trio throughout the album- modern and up-to-date yet still very much Genesis. There is some very notable guitar playing by Mike Rutherford, who stands out more on this album than either of the previous three studio albums. Another good thing is there is plenty of live drum action from Phil Collins, drum action that was somewhat missing from the more pop-oriented Genesis albums of the 80s. Collins' voice is better than ever. 'We Can't Dance' is definately a Genesis album worth purchasing.
