Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Dawna Lisa Buchanan
I am not sure that the content of this phonics instruction book would appeal to its potential audience. Directions for making "skill" materials to use in conjunction with the book are given, as well as descriptions of games to play to further "enhance" student learning. The actual content of the story, which is written in rhyme, is flimsy. "My dad likes to bake. No junk for my meals! He makes me eat fish sticks with peas that he peels. I ask for red meat with a good bit of fat. Yet he hands me red beets that I slip to the cat." (pgs. 4-7) The father feeds his old dog, who is "huge in the seat" (pg. 19) as many bones and treats as he wants, and the story concludes with a pedantic "That junk makes her sick and makes her so weak...but with all my greens, I run like a streak." (Pgs. 24-25). Huh? I did not find the story credible or interesting, and the instructions to parents definitely overwhelm the underwhelming story line. The only redeeming characteristic of this book are the pictures. The cheerful cartoon characters feature rich color and creative details which are much more interesting than the words. They are rendered in watercolor, pen and ink and are a bright spot in this otherwise dull offering. "We Read Phonics," Level 4. Reviewer: Dawna Lisa Buchanan
