Children's Literature - Natalie Gurr
Joe and Lizzie are working with their class to create a garden. Their teacher calls them the Garden Crew. They look for the perfect place for their garden. It has to have lots of sunshine and good dirt. The students draw up a plan and sow the seeds. They weed the garden and give it lots of water. After lots of hard work, the seeds start to grow. There are vegetables and some pretty daisies. The Garden Crew celebrates with a great big salad made with food from the garden. Gardening and plant growth is discussed in simple terms that children will understand and relate to. Comprehension level and sentence structure is appropriate for the intended age group. The illustrations support the content and enrich the story. Children are depicted enjoying various gardening activities under the watchful care of a happy teacher. The book includes a number of teaching ideas and phonics games. The games and lessons are entertaining and the ideas can be applied to other concepts. Reviewer: Natalie Gurr
