In the 90s ...

texting involved paper and a pen ...

... our selfies were Polaroids ...

... our favorite music was on mix tapes.

Sex was dangerous, music was raw, and falling in love felt nostalgic.

We were friends and lovers.

We thought we knew everything.

We knew nothing.

We were here.

I have been looking forward to reading WE WERE HERE by one of my favorite authors, Daisy Prescott, since I learned that it was being written as a prequel to GEODUCKS ARE FOR LOVERS, a favorite book of mine. WE WERE HERE takes the characters we met in GEODUCKS and gives us their individual backstories in such a clever, engaging, emotional way. Set in the early 90's, Prescott shares with us the tender, driven, hilarious, heart filled and hard college experiences that these friends share, with bonds so strong that we miss the exact moment when these friends become family. Each chapter is a song title from the times… Each character has their own section of chapters devoted to them. It was a treat for me to experience each character's thoughts and feelings. To witness why things we learned about in GEODUCKS were done, and appreciate where the original characters began. It was a privilege to acknowledge the maturity that came along with meeting the right people. It was familiar to recognize the angst of holding feelings inside until you wanted to burst. It was painful to accept that in one small moment, wrong decisions could somehow be justified, and it was great to laugh, to howl and to enjoy a trip down memory lane… WE WERE HERE can be read as a stand alone, but is great company for it's predecessor GEODUCKS ARE FOR LOVERS. I highly, HIGHLY recommend picking this beauty of a book up! Bravo, Daisy Prescott!!!

College in the 90's was fun and free. Nobody had a cell phone to track you down they had to call your dorm room or leave a message on the white board stuck to your door. Email didn't exist and pictures were spontaneous. It was a time of exploration and meeting lifetime friends. This book made me nostalgic for my college years and makes me wonder what happened to my friends, thank goodness for Facebook. After reading the Modern Love Story series and the mini stories I am heavily invested in these crazy kids. To read the love story between Jo and Ben made a lot of sense, Jo wears the pants and Ben loves it. The second chance that Gil and Magpie get in Geoducks is so special. I was really pleased to ride the friendship roller coaster with them, even knowing the inevitable. Oh, and Selah, her fascination with pirates started here in line for a concert. Her passion makes so much sense now. Each section was devoted to a specific friend as their time in college progressed, I have to say my favorites were Ben and Gil. Within the sections were perfect chapter headings of songs from the 90's, and now I have to add a few to my iTunes account. We Were Here is a prequel to the Modern Love Story series however I recommend reading Geoducks Are For Lovers and all the minis first then go back and read the rest of the series. Thank you Ms. Prescott for my early reviewer copy.
