We Were Here First, an entertaining collection of Baby Blues comic strips handpicked by cocreators Rick Kirkman and Jerry Scott, focuses on the relationship between Darryl and Wanda MacPherson—before and after parenthood turns their life upside down.

A love story set in the trenches of child rearing, We Were Here First follows the account of Darryl and Wanda earning their stripes as parents to their three children—the headstrong Zoe, easygoing Hammie, and baby Wren—all the while trying to make time for themselves, even if it's a mere 30 stolen seconds!

Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 4 Up—For parents, the "Baby Blues" comic strip can be a humorous reflection of everyday family life. For children, the popular strip provides a glimpse into the world of adults. Some kids (especially those with younger siblings) will delight in this shift in perspective; others may have trouble identifying. As the title suggests, the focus here is on parenthood more than anything else. Darryl and Wanda MacPherson navigate the responsibilities of work and family while attempting to maintain their sanity. Their two small children (which expands to three in this book) aren't easy on them. There are certainly laughs, but most scenarios appeal to a more adult sensibility. The loose cartoon illustrations pair nicely with the text and are laid out in a way that is clear and easy to read. Some kids may get the jokes, but the book doesn't hold the same level of appeal as elementary-school standards like "Garfield" and "Calvin & Hobbes."—Travis Jonker, Dorr Elementary School, MI
