Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Greg M. Romaneck
World War I remains one of the deadliest events in human history. In four years the armies of the Allies and Central Powers waged warfare at a cost of ten million human lives. Throughout that war, while armies clashed using tactics better suited to the early nineteenth century, efforts were made to arm and equip the participating soldiers with the finest armaments, ordnance and uniforms possible. In this volume in the illustrated "Equipped for Battle" series readers are provided a quick overview of the types of weaponry, clothing, and accoutrements used by men in battle during the Great War. In presenting this chronicle of the material objects of World War I, author Fein relies primarily on a combination of concise descriptions and photographs. In this way younger readers are offered an opportunity to learn about advances in military science while simultaneously seeing the way they actually looked. During World War I innovations such as the use of air power, dreadnoughts, flame throwers, poison gas, submarines, and machine guns all came to the forefront. These innovations were not matched by more progressive tactics which led to the terrible losses that typified World War I. However, for youngsters with an interest in military hardware will find this little book highly interesting. Reviewer: Greg M. Romaneck
