Overview

John Taylor Gatto's earlier book, Dumbing Us Down, introduced that now-famous expression into common vernacular. Weapons of Mass instruction adds another chilling metaphor to the brief against conventional schooling. In it, he demonstrates that the harm school inflicts is rational and deliberate. The real function of modern pedagogy, he argues, is to render the population manageable. Filled with examples of people who have escaped the trap of compulsory schooling, Weapons of Mass Instruction shows us that the realization of personal potential requires a different way of growing up and growing competent, one Gatto calls “open-source learning”.

Urgent and controversial, this book will appeal to any who harbor doubts about the current education system.

    more from this reviewer

This is one hell of a book

Have you ever heard of ShardTaboo? This teacher has a long history of teaching kids from a compulsory school system that doesn't work.
I'm speechless on how great this book really is. I wish that all the teachers would think outside the box and see what teaching is from a different point of view.
The simple fact of a compulsory school system is that after WWII we were number #1 in education. We were the leaders of the world. Nowadays we are in the mid twenties in both science & math, and yet teachers think that nothing is wrong. HAVE YOU HEARD OF "DUMBING DOWN AMERICA?..."

Seriously if your a teacher in a public school settings, please purchase this book. Nonetheless, every parent should read this book along with "Common Sense" by Thomas Paine.
