Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Kip Wilson
One of books in the "Weapons of War" series produced by Capstone Press, this book engages struggling readers with layouts that jump off the page. Each spread comes to life with low-level text, "Weapon Facts," and colorful images. Images in this book include both artwork depicting soldiers from both sides of World War I and photographs of soldiers and their weapons as described in the text. The photographs are especially striking, and since more are presumably available in the 20th century, it might have been better to use photographs exclusively. Glossary terms are highlighted and defined both on the specific page and in the back of the book for reference. Weapons depicted range from pistols and rifles to poisonous gas and howitzers. Other new weapons such as zeppelins and submarines are also described. Pages titled "Infantry Weapons and Gear," "Heavy Weapons and Explosives," and "Vehicles" contain individual images of items such as the gas mask and the anti-aircraft missile, breaking up the pages of text. The "Weapons Facts" are interesting, but might have been more aptly named "World War I Facts," since some do not pertain specifically to weapons. In any case, this book is thoroughly enjoyable and should be of great interest to those wanting to read about the weapons of World War I. Reviewer: Kip Wilson
