Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Amy McMillan
Kids are more than a little curious about their world and the “National Geographic Kids” series is a great resource for helping them to learn. This volume introduces basic weather concepts including the sun, clouds, moisture, thunder, lightning, and rainbows. Gorgeous full-color photographs fill the pages. Each short chapter is titled with bold, off-set text. Text boxes containing new vocabulary words and jokes are sprinkled over the pages and the final spread contains a short quiz and re-cap of some of the new words. The information is brief but accurate; the format is eye-catching and reader-friendly. The book is a great introduction to the conventions of non-fiction. The publishers have labeled this as a Level 1, for kids who are just beginning to read on their own, but the text is a bit advanced. Some decoding can be done with the illustrations; but there is very little repetition and new vocabulary is introduced with pronunciation guides, which will probably confuse early readers. Readers will need to be mostly independent to enjoy this one on their own, but it’s a perfect read-together for beginners who will certainly have questions and want to know more about what’s in the book. Reviewer: Amy McMillan; Ages 4 to 8.
