Overview

"The Pacific Northwest experiences the most varied and fascinating weather in the United States, including world-record winter snows, the strongest nontropical storms in the nation, and shifts from desert to rain forest in a matter of miles. Local weather features dominate the meteorological landscape, from the Puget Sound convergence zone and wind surges along the Washington Coast to gap winds through the Columbia Gorge and the "Banana Belt" of southern Oregon. This comprehensive and authoritative guide to Northwest weather is written primarily for general readers, including boaters, hikers, and skiers, but it will also interest expert meteorologists." Mass combines eyewitness accounts, historical records, and meteorological science to explain Pacific Northwest weather. He also considers possible local effects of global warming. The final chapters guide readers in interpreting the Northwest sky and in securing weather information on their own.

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
The Pacific Northwest is a haven for hikers, mountain climbers, skiers, boaters, and meteorologists. No other American region possesses weather patterns that are more varied or unique, making the windy Northwest an endless source of fascination and bemusement. This handy paperback guide, penned by a popular University of Washington professor and PBS commentator, demystifies all those confusing local meteorological conditions. It offers detailed answers to frequently asked question: Why does the Northwest have so few thunderstorms? Why do ferryboats sometimes seem to float above the surface of the water? What is the origin of the hurricane-force winds that often buffet the region? An engaging look at an omnipresent subject.

    Proud Seattlite!

I took a skim through this book several times and was really fascinated how our weather here in the Northwest shapes our lives and who we are and how we dress. I rated the usefullness of this book with one star only because unless if your studying to be a meteorologist then this book might not be as useful to buy and keep. Unless if your a die hard northwest weather fanatic amongst other things.

    Weather, or not

Cliff Mass has done a fabulous job of demystifying the PacNW weather - and is the first weather forecaster ever to confess how inexact his science really is. Beautiful photos throughout, and not too much technical jargon.

    Great book on PNW Weather

An excellent and easy to understand book on the Pacific Northwest's weather. It is factual, historical and humorous at times. Great graphs and charts. If you're a native of the PNW, you'll remember some of these storms and enjoy the facts on how it formed and the results. A really great book for students, naturalists, and anyone who wants to understand our weather.
