Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
Bet you didn't know that meteorology-the term associated with the science that deals with the weather came from a treatise by Aristotle. Dr. Kahl provides lots of facts about the history of weather watching, basic information about how the weather works (air, clouds, wind, precipitation), and what the sky conditions denote. Then he turns to a discussion of forecasting including a good description of today's tools- satellites, radar, and radiosondes and tell us why meteorologists will never achieve perfect accuracy. The last chapter provides instructions for building your own weather station with a barometer, thermometer, hygrometer, anemometer, weather vane, rain gauge and a weather shelter. An index and glossary round out this informative and well illustrated book.
School Library Journal
Gr 5-8This fifth book in the series focuses on the work of meteorologists. Basic information on weather systems, maps, and forecasting tools used by the National Weather Service and other agencies worldwide is provided in a clear, simple text supplemented by good-quality, full-color photographs and diagrams. Brief consideration of the daily weather records kept by George Washington and other early American leaders; Benjamin Franklin's publication of Poor Richard's Almanac; and the link between folkloric sayings and weather facts add interest. Directions for making a weather station (barometer, thermometer, hygrometer, anemometer, weather vane, rain gauge, and shelter for housing the instruments) and suggestions on making observations, recording measurements, and making forecasts are included. There is some overlap with the content of earlier titles in the series, especially Weatherwise (Lerner, 1992). Students curious about TV weather reports will find this book a good place to start; teachers will find it a useful resource for introductory units on forecasting.Carolyn Angus, The Claremont Graduate School, CA
