Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
The Barnes & Noble Review
Honestly, now: Are you happy with your web site? Is it showing you off the way you’d like? Or did it stop being competitive in, say, 2001? Richard Wagner proves that upgrading your site needn’t be horrifically complex or expensive. His book focuses on simple, valuable upgrades that work. Creating more compelling home pages. Improving navigation. Speeding page loads. Adding site search. Useful stuff -- taught through hands-on projects, not blather.

Want more contemporary navigation? Wagner walks through creating effective top and sidebar navigation using CSS, and building a “quick links” drop-down combo box. There’s a full chapter of simple page element makeovers: tweaking HTML tables so they work more effectively as part of a coherent, attractive layout; using CSS to “make sure each element stands alone yet plays well with others”; and packaging content with iframes.

You’ll learn quick ways to supercharge your home page by clarifying whom you’re targeting, making sure your content meets their needs and adding dynamic content to keep them coming back. Speaking of content, you’ll learn how to write web-savvier text (and improve text and links you already have). Have forms? Wagner will help you make them consistent, attractive, and intuitive.

Next, he turns to improvements in site functionality that are surprisingly easy from a technical standpoint: making your site friendlier to search engines; adding maps and directions; even integrating blogs and podcasts. There are some nice small touches, too: for instance, customizing your own Favorites icon, and editing email links so they won’t attract spam.

All the before-and-after makeover files are downloadable. And while Wagner’s partial to Dreamweaver and Photoshop, this book’s projects are flexible enough for your favorite tools, whatever they might be. Bill Camarda, from the July 2006 Read Only
