From Barnes & NobleThe Barnes & Noble Review
How do the world's best web designers do what they do? See for yourself, in the full-color Web Design Studio Secrets, Second Edition. Photoshop maven Deke McClelland and his colleagues peer over the shoulders of 15 great designers, cajoling them into revealing the secrets of their hottest projects.
These ideas are rooted firmly in reality. And they run the gamut, from down-and-dirty tips (when to use LOWSRC to load low-res preview images; how to build a table to do exactly what you want it to) to high-level issues (more effective site management and workflow techniques).
There's a wonderful expert guide to rollovers (sure, you can automate them in Dreamweaver, but not the cool ones designer Neil Robertson shows you how to build). You'll watch expert designers breathe new life into animated GIFs, and work around Flash's limitations (for example, to create 3D bevel and emboss effects). You'll discover just the right Premiere and QuickTime settings for delivering optimum video on the Web. You'll even walk through building a site that will get its content from enterprise databases, watching how templates can be used in the real world to enforce consistency and improve efficiency.
A minor gripe: some of the work in this Second Edition has been around a couple of years. But all of it, new and old, is superb, and all the ideas are relevant. More than relevant, actually: powerfully useful.
