Great for those Mental Blocks !!!

I was able to come up with an original look after looking at different styles of website designs. Without the right software or proper art work , some of these designs in the book won't compare to what you want to do. You have to make it with what you already have or invest in more graphic already done or design your own.

    Great idea book

This book has a lot of great ideas for any web designer or graphic artist. Gives you the codes for the colors. Also a great book for a person like me who can't match colors.

    Great for aspiring web designers

Sometimes with new projects I get "designers" block. I'm not sure where to start, or have an idea but not enough to make it a big picture, or just need visuals to improve an existing site. Now I keep this book handy for all of those issues and more.

    Useful for Ideas

In the highly competitive world of web design, creation of fresh designs is always a critical portion of any web development project. There are many examples of poor and excellent design out there and this book attempts to capture some of the examples in a portable format. Given the capricious nature of web design trends, no book like this could be authoritative; new trends come on to the scene in the time it takes the completed book to be printed and shipped! Also, given the immeasurable size of the web, there are hundreds of thousands of web sites which might be arbitrarily judged as better than those presented in this book. As such, this book is not the be-all-and-end-all of exemplary web design...

...nor was it meant to be. This book is a good place to use as a 'jumping-off' point for design projects. With so many example designs in the world, it often helps to have a relatively small list of designs to review and from which to get ideas. The book is organized into numerous sections based on dominant colors, themes (grass, wood, distressed, etc), and structural elements (3-buckets, horizontal navigation, etc.) and the like and includes, for many of the sections, sample color palettes. These color palettes would be useful except for the fact that a given color on the page often bears little resemblance to the same color (by hex code) on the screen. Web Designers- you already know this! Additionally, many of the designs require significant graphics manipulation experience (i.e., Photoshop, GIMP) to emulate. Granted, any moderately-complicated wholly custom design requires the same.

One large failing of the book is a relative lack of time spent on the immensely important subject of usability. As anyone with a web browser knows, web sites are primarily tools, not works of art, and many of the most attractive designs are the least usable. This is not a necessarily a criticism of the sites presented in the book, but rather an item which needs to be given more attention in the presentation of example styles.

"The Web Designer's Idea Book" is a good starting-off point for designs. I would contest the subtitle ("the ultimate guide to themes...design") but it is a good resource to use in conjunction with the many other additional "best design" resources available.

Very helpful as inspiration for new ideas of your own

I bought this book because I am in the process of updating my own website and I was having "web builder's block." This book was helpful in showing me a wide variety of options. It is divided into different styles and colors and all the web addresses are included so you can look at them in-depth online. Interestingly, some designers had already changed their sites from the screen capture in the book, providing even more examples of interesting design and how rapidly things change. I think the book is a great resource and I've already recommended it to several friends.
