Overview

During his long career -- a career that began in 1889 when he was 12 and ended when he died in 1964 -- Pierre Monteux was acknowledged to be one of the great conductors. He gave the premieres of Debussy's "Jeux," Ravel's "Daphnis et Chloé," and Stravinsky's "Petrushka" and "Le Sacre du printemps." His baton technique was praised by Toscanini and he was universally loved by orchestral musicians. Best of all, as he himself said, "I have no interpretations, I play the music." But do Monteux's best qualities come through on this disc of live performances done with the London Symphony in the four years before his death? Almost but not quite: his baton technique, while impressive, is not quite what it had been. But everything else is still right there. Even in these dull and faded live recordings, one can still hear everything that's going on in the scores -- listen to the inner voices in Ravel's "Le tombeau de Couperin" -- can still hear the affection of the players -- listen to their soulful solos in Elgar's "Enigma Variations" -- and, best of all, can still hear the music and not the conductor interpreting the music -- listen to the performance of Willem Pijper's "Third Symphony," a model of clarity and conviction. While older listeners may prefer Monteux and the LSO's studio performance of Elgar's "Enigma" released on Decca, younger listeners who don't already know Monteux's work are urged to try this disc.
