We purchased this dictionary in 1996 for our now college age daughter, it has lasted 12 years before it started to come apart (used every week, we encourage book use over internet) The entries have everything, language usage, broad definitions and easy to explain and understand by all ages.

This dictionary is outstanding! With its concise, authoritative definitions, extensive word bank, and numerous illustrations, it is a must-have for the school, home, or office library of any scholar ranging from a fifth grade student to a professor in etymology. I strongly recommend it to anyone who wishes to pay the least possible price for the best dictionary available on the market at the start of the 21st century. This dicionary is far stronger than any college dictionary in existence, and it even outdoes the 20 volume Oxford English dictionary, which gives an evaluative essay of each word instead of a coherant definition like the Webster's New World Dictionary. This defeats the purpose of having such a 50,000+ page word atlas which makes your eyes water at the first paragraph. The same applies to Webster's Third New International Dictionary. In addition, this dictionary costs only $1 more than the Merriam Webster Collegiate Dictionary, yet it has twice the amount of words. Out of a possible of 5 stars, I rate this dictionary at 10 points!!!!

I can't get used to the american pronunciation keys. Why don't they use the International Phonetic Symbols like the rest of the world? People who use such a 2000+ page dictionary should be able to know the IPS.
