An absolutely amazing work! For so many years the Merriam-Webster Collegiate Dictionary was my workhorse and constant companion. As happens so very often, while looking up one word I will stumble upon another word whose meaning I didn't know. While reading the definition of this word I make the acquaintance of another new friend (word), and so it goes ad infinitum. The Merriam Webster Unabridged Dictionary provides me with a storehouse full of new friends! Where else can anyone find this many new friends for less than $100?

As a mainstay for the English language in most libraries across the U.S., this comprehensive volume is an eminently readable and superlative work of reference for the serious scholar and inquisitive student alike. Its relatively modest history is the closest comparable reference available, with respect to the OED. Buy it, use it, take delight in its heft and comprehensive survey of the American English language. Most American scholars regard it as THE unabridged.

I grew up with Merriam-Webster's Unabridged as my everyday go-to reference, and it served me admirably. My favorite entry is "mickle". In the 2nd edition, it had 2 words of definition, 4 lines of etymology, and a lovely example ("A man of mickle might"). Look it up. Enjoy.

I am delighted with the dictionary. I give free rice by selecting the correct defenition of words. These are not common words & I have to look up nearly all of them. The Second edition did not have enough definitions available. I get 10 grains of rice for each correct answer, & I give at least 1000 grains each day. Occasionally I might miss a day, but I try not to. The book is easy to use & has allowed me to reach my goal in an hour or so, each time. Go to freerice.com & join in. There are other subjects besides vocabulary.
