**** The core of W3, originally published in 1961 (and cited in BCL3, Sheehy, and Walford), needs little reintroduction, its essential daily use in a wide variety of settings assuring comfortable familiarity. The present 1993 printing includes an addenda section that is bound into the front of the volume, and consists of approximately 14,000 new words and meanings that have entered the language since the original publication. Users who haven't worn out their copies of previous printings can order the addenda section through the publisher for $5. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)

Simply Outstanding in Depth and Breadth

As a mainstay for the English language in most libraries across the U.S., this comprehensive volume is an eminently readable and superlative work of reference for the serious scholar and inquisitive student alike. Its relatively modest history is the closest comparable reference available, with respect to the OED. Buy it, use it, take delight in its heft and comprehensive survey of the American English language. Most American scholars regard it as THE unabridged.
