Book Six in the Cobble Street Cousins series, Cynthia Rylant's Wedding Flowers, illus. by Wendy Anderson Halperin, tells of Rosie, Lily and Tess's return to Cobble Street for Aunt Lucy's wedding to Michael. (Apr.) Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.
Children's Literature
The cousins, Lily, Rosie and Tess, had spent almost a year at the quaint house on Cobble Street with their Aunt Lucy. During that year, the cousins had made time to play matchmaker for their Aunt Lucy and Michael. Much to their delight, there was now going to be a wedding. The three had kept in touch primarily by letters but were finally having a reunion on Cobble Street for Aunt Lucy's wedding. Not only had their matchmaking been a success, but also Aunt Lucy had asked them to help with the wedding and be bridesmaids. They can barely stand their excitement, but they have so much to do. Lily, Rosie and Tess work hard at making the wedding fun and personal. The couple has decided that since morning is their favorite time of day, they will have a Saturday morning wedding. Since Aunt Lucy owns a flower shop, the three cousins think it only fitting to have a floral shish kebab including Sunflower Cinnamon Biscuits, cheese leaves (since Michael is a botanist) and fruit. The wedding is a big hit as well as the girls' wedding gift, a Homemade Scrapbook. The cousins then sadly say their good-byes, making plans to spend some time next summer at Aunt Lucy's. This delightful story will be both entertaining and amusing to young girls. Part of "The Cobble Street Cousins" series. 2002, Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers/Aladdin Paperbacks, $15.00. Gr 2-3-Fans of this sweet series will know to expect extra frosting on their wedding cake. In this installment, Lily, Tess, and Rosie combine their trademark enthusiasm and cooperation to create a sunny morning for Aunt Lucy's marriage. The angelic 10-year-olds seldom encounter conflict, which may explain why they have so much energy to pour into their projects. Rylant's balance of action and dialogue keeps the wedding-related activities moving along. Halperin's extensive spot art underscores the pleasant spirit, and provides the visual breaks that chapter-book readers crave. Rylant's positive-minded cousins continue to counterbalance the wisecracking heroes of other chapter-book series.-Pat Leach, Lincoln City Libraries, NE Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.
