Overview

Flora MacDonald is one of the heroes of the Jacobite Rising of 1745-6. Putting herself into great danger, she helped Bonnie Prince Charlie, who was disguised as her maid Betty Burke, flee from the outer isles to Skye when being hunted by the brutal government forces of Butcher Cumberland. Flora was imprisoned, but later freed in a general amnesty. Finding life difficult on Skye, Flora and her husband eventually emigrated to North Carolina in the Americas. Here they were embroiled in a new rebellion, one that would see the birth of the USA, but this time they fought for the British government. Flora was on the losing side and was ruined, and had no choice but to return to Skye. This Wee Guide relates the adventures of Flora with Bonnie Prince Charlie during the Jacobite Rising, her imprisonment in London, return to Scotland, emigration to the USA, and eventual homecoming to Skye. The book includes many places to visit associated with Flora, the Jacobites, and her clan the MacDonalds.
