Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Sheilah Egan
Providing opportunities for youngsters to experience and fully enjoy all kinds of music enhances all aspects of their development, but, most especially in encouraging movement, coordination, and motor skills: walking, marching, skipping, jumping, hopping, bending, stretching, balancing—all of which carry over nicely in other areas of learning and confidence building. Moving to music also reinforces sequencing and language development, while stimulating a variety of learning skills: visual and spatial development, as well as those pre-reading skills such as moving to specific directions that hones skills in the concepts of left, right, up, down, backward, forward, beside, etc. Young ones will enjoy singing along with the children's voices on the CD and following the directions voiced by the clear "adult vocals." The thirty-nine selections are from a wide range of musical traditions: classical, traditional, folk, and modern compositions suitable for capturing the interest of pre-schoolers. Favorites such as "The Hokey Pokey," "Head and Shoulders," and "Pop! Goes the Weasel" are all joined by less well known selections such as "The Dinosaur Party," "Popcorn Ball," and "Hey, Mr. Knickerbocker" and others. Classical themes from Vivaldi, Sibelieus, Bach, Strauss, Beethoven, Handel, etc., are included with toddler appropriate words and actions. No matter which song is playing, this CD will get bodies in motion, voices joining in, and provide merriment in generous helpings. The sixty-four page booklet included in the package has sepia-ish line drawings to accompany the lyrics and simple melody line of music (guitar chords and changes are also marked). The spreads for each song have instructions for getting started ("Formation") and describe the movements for that particular march, action rhyme, etc. ("Action"). Notations are included to identify composer and give dates for the original music e.g. "John Philip Sousa: The Stars and Stripes Forever-1987." Backmatter includes and index to titles. This book and CD (part of the "Wee Sing" series, all of which are designed with little people in mind) will have everyone moving to the beat. Reviewer: Sheilah Egan
