The book is sturdy and filled with bright, cheery pictures for each of the eight rhymes. Among the better-known selections are the title rhyme, Jack and Jill, Pat-a-cake, and Star Light, Star Bright. The pictures portray a host of multicultural animals and plenty of amusing details such as the soldiers falling off the tower of books into a box in the Duke of York rhyme. Once you have seen one, you will want the three other titles in the series (Humpty Dumpty, Little Boy Blue, and Pussycat Pussycat). 2001 (orig. 1996), Candlewick, $4.99. Ages 1 up. One of the most important books in a baby's collection is a volume of Mother Goose. I've heard that many of the rhythms and rhymes echo a mother's heartbeat. That would explain why these verses can soothe a seemingly inconsolable infant into sleep, or bring smiles and giggles to a bored baby. Choosing a particular volume depends on personal taste. Recently Rosemary Wells collaborated with Iona Opie to create a wonderful new book, My Very First Mother Goose. It has since been divided up into four board books-Wee Willie Winkie, Humpty Dumpty, Little Boy Blue, and Pussycat, Pussycat.

PreS--Sixteen selections included in My Very First Mother Goose (Candlewick, 1996) are presented in board-book format. The lively watercolor-and-ink illustrations are identical to the original and often larger, although some pictures have been omitted in a few instances to avoid overcrowding the smaller space. Each rhyme appears in a double-page spread on a colored background that picks up a tone in the illustration. The print is smaller than in the original, but the text is laid out in much the same way or in logical phrases.
