Overview

Weight Watchers has helped millions of people worldwide lose weight and keep it off. Now, as the global epidemic of adult and childhood obesity gets more and more serious, Weight Watchers turns its focus to the family. For the first time, Family Power provides proven, practical, real-world solutions for a healthy-weight home.

Family Power is a comprehensive guide to healthful weight management for all members of the family, including children and adolescents. Family Power answers parents' most common questions about family weight-management issues while clearly telling you what works and what doesn't. The latest scientific research has shown that children are strongly influenced by the food- and physical activity–related decisions made by parents and other family members, and this knowledge provides the basis for the advice in this breakthrough book. Karen Miller-Kovach, Chief Scientific Officer of Weight Watchers International, reveals the most effective family weight-management strategies while sharing the inspiring stories and experiences of families who have adopted them to show how everyone in your family can develop good lifestyle habits and achieve and maintain a healthy weight.

This friendly, practical guide outlines the basics of weight management and shows the important differences between children and adults when approaching weight management. Family Power then explores the 5 Simple Rules for optimal family health, explaining why they work and how to make them a positive and enjoyable part of family life. Family Power advocates that families make small, consistent changes in their lifestyles, and following the Rules is a realistic and healthy way to make these changes. You'll discover the roles parents play in reinforcing the Rules while keeping children active and involved. You'll see how to handle special situations and challenges—from untraditional family structures to unhelpful people—and you'll find out where to get extra help if you need it.

Filled with the motivational profiles of families who have achieved healthy-weight homes as well as expert advice from their coaches, Family Power will help coach you and your family so that you can live together in a healthy-weight home too. Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
* With refreshing practicality and easy-to-follow instructions, Weight Watchers' chief scientific officer Miller-Kovach shows how a family can take small steps to eliminate childhood weight problems and establish a "healthy-weight home... in which everyone who lives there has a lifestyle that encourages them to be at a weight that is right and healthy for them." The steps in this process are unthreatening lifestyle changes, such as focusing on nutritious foods, including treats; rationing nonhomework TV time; being active one hour or more every day; and having these changes apply to the whole family. Miller-Kovach outlines parents' responsibilities for ensuring a healthful diet for their kids: they must be food role models, food enforcers, activity providers and activity enforcers. Chapters such as "Setting Food Policy" and sections on adult versus child weight loss detail how to take these roles; sidebars called "Coach's Corner" pinpoint problems like "The Reluctant Teen." Portraits show how families made changes like taking walks or drinking nonfat milk to lose weight. In all, the book plainly offers ways to incorporate dietary common sense into a family's routine. Notes on special needs and additional sources complete the book. (Jan.) (Publishers Weekly, December 12, 2005)
