“It's a picture book with high-interest narration. . . . [In] this highly graphic, well-written text, the reader learns about more than 150 fiendish friends in the animal kingdom. On every page, the focus is on details. . . and Kingfisher knows what children want. They want to be in awe, to be face-to-face with something beautiful (or downright ugly), to learn fascinating facts, and to examine detail that is difficult even for researchers to see in the wild. . . . Definitely pick up Attack and Defense. Students will be waiting in line to read this one.” NSTA Recommends

Children's Literature - Kristin Harris
Attack and Defense is part of the "Weird & Wonderful" series. Titles from the series include Show-Offs, Super Senses, Thrive in the Wild, Up Close and Where I Live. This book features a selection of animals with unusual traits that affect their hunting and survival. The characteristics covered are weapons and tools, team spirit, tricks and traps and chemical warfare. Animals are dependent on their bodies and cunning to hunt and survive. Some animals have very unique body parts for these tasks. Komodo dragons, tigers and sharks have specialized teeth that facilitate killing their prey. Not all such "tools" are for killing; marine iguanas have curved claws for gripping rocks in heavy seas. Other animals are very good at hiding or have very potent poison like the funnel web spider, one of the most dangerous spiders in the world. Kinds of body armor help pangolins, armadillos, urchins and Puffer fish to protect themselves. The page design of this book is bright and colorful. The text is easily accessible with information arranged in varying font sizes to prioritize the content. Large informative photographs and a few illustrations provide graphic details about the animals mentioned.
