Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
The Barnes & Noble Review
Babyhood has never looked so playful as in this rollicking, rhyme-filled picture book by Stephanie Calmenson, with pictures by Melissa Sweet.

In 33 original rhymes, parents and babies can recognize everything that makes being a little tyke so much fun. Verses like "Little Blue Whale," with rolling lines like "Little blue whale/In a big blue sea,/Splish, splash,/Swim with me" are clever odes to everyday activities like taking baths, while "Babies in a Stroller" and "Riding Shoulders" ("Riding shoulders way up high./Waving to the passersby./Grabbing glasses, grabbing hair./Looking, looking, everywhere!") give cheery perspective on enjoying the outdoors with Mom and Dad. Other toddler-loving themes include first milestones like walking and talking, learning counting and the alphabet, and pretending.

A perfect blend of lighthearted rhymes and refreshing illustrations, this read-aloud charmer will tickle your fancy. Not only will this hit a sweet spot for new parents wanting to read to their children, but kids will love practicing the rhymes as they develop their language and reading skills. A baby celebration that will lift your spirits! Matt Warner

Publishers Weekly
Created especially for the youngest set, Welcome, Baby! Baby Rhymes for Baby Times by Stephanie Calmenson, illus. by Melissa Sweet, presents more than 30 verses alongside Sweet's nursery-friendly paintings. Original works include a bathtime chant ("Splishy, Splashy"), "Silly Toe Song" and, for goodnight, "Butterfly Kiss" ("A Butterfly/ Fluttered by/ And gave a kiss/ Just like this").
School Library Journal
PreS-This adorable compendium of original rhymes begins with an infant's birth. "Somebody special/Is due any day./Everyone's happy because/Baby's on the way!" Sweet and playful rhymes about the daily activities of babies and toddlers continue. "I see a baby/Whose diaper is wet./I know how wet/A diaper can get." Gradually the youngsters become a little older. "We're having a party!/Will you please come?/It's a special day-/Baby turns one!" The selections are whimsical and lively and are sure to grab the attention of even the littlest listeners. Sweet's bright, colorful watercolors depict children and families engaging in activities such as playing, clapping, changing diapers, and taking baths. Colors, ABCs, counting, and animal sounds are also introduced. The soft, round characters are pleasing to the eye and complement the rhymes perfectly. A wonderful addition to any picture-book collection.-Kristin de Lacoste, South Regional Public Library, Pembroke Pines, FL Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.
Kirkus Reviews
A collection of original poems offers cheery readalouds for very young children. Roughly encompassing a child's first year, they go from a pregnant mom to baby's first birthday. The pictures are bright and winsome: clear colors and recognizable baby realia-toys, pets, household objects, and parents-inhabit the pages. The babies are of various races and genders and they do what babies do. In "I Like Buttons": "Buttons here. Buttons there. / Some I push. Some I wear." There are cell-phone and elevator buttons, and both dad and kid have nice big buttons on their shirts. "Babies in a Stroller" takes kids to the store, to the mailbox, and to the park. There's counting poems, an alphabet poem, a poem for colors, and a few pretty silly ones, too. It all ends appropriately with a kiss goodnight, "A butterfly / Fluttered by / And gave a kiss / Just like this." (Picture book/poetry. 2-5)
