Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
Touch and feel elements seem to be pretty popular in books right now. The focus here is autumn, or "fall." The opening spread shows a boy looking at a tree. Readers can lift the large flap to find that, suddenly, all of the green leaves have turned orange, red, yellow and brown. The winds are blowing a little harder; and since it is cooler in fall, the boy's scarf billows out behind him as he strolls along. The scarf is textured and available for young ones to run their fingers across. Who can resist jumping into a pile of leaves? Here, they crunch and crinkle. The apples are ready to be picked; unfortunately, these shiny balls look more like oranges than apples. The closing pages show a father and son in each other's arms and what looks like a just-baked apple pie cooling. The concepts are appropriate for teaching about this season. Too bad there wasn't better control over the printing of the red in the apples. This board book has another positive feature in that the young boy appears to be African-American.
