Editorial Reviews

From The Critics
Pooling their rather considerable talents, an acclaimed poet and an award-winning artist create a tender ode to new babies. The text, rich in imagery and lyricism, welcomes a new child into the world, giving a taste of the pleasures that lie ahead: "Welcome to the warm circle of your daddy's arms, the slippery kisses of your giddy grandmother, and the cool tickle of Mommy's nose rubbing against your belly button." Equally moving are the watercolor and collage depictions of a clearly smitten mother and father caring for their baby. (Ages Birth to 2)
Child magazine's Best Children's Book Awards 2006
Children's Literature
This celebration of the arrival of a new baby to an African American family should fill the hearts of young listeners almost as much as it will those of welcoming parents. The brief text is rich in the sensations of the world around, "brimming with things to see and hear, taste and touch." From the "robin song" to the "silk of grass" to "the mystery of soap bubbles" it will all be a part of life safe in the love of Mommy, Daddy, and Grandmother. Collier uses watercolors and collage to create naturalistic scenes which cover most of the double pages. He picks up a few words for each illustration, like noses rubbing a belly button, or the enjoyment of an ice cream cone. His visual tale is told in detailed scenes with a cast of loving characters. Each scene is complete but also contributes to the emotion-packed sequence. The mood is set by the loving family on the front cover, with the back showing the peaceful night, both repeated inside as the last two illustrations. 2006, Orchard Books/Scholastic, Ages 3 to 6.

In its original form, this picture book was selected as one of The Best Children's Books of the Year in 2007 by Bank Street College of Education; it also received a National Parenting Publications Award. This story works just as well in its board book format. Reviewer: Ken Marantz and Sylvia Marantz

PreS-This picture book is a lyrical, exultant welcome for the newest member of an African-American family. Collier's watercolor-and-collage illustrations in vivid summery hues and enticing textures depict the happy parents as they introduce their baby to the sights and sounds of "a world wrapped in rainbow." The paintings portray scenes of cozy domestic life, each clearly capturing the couple's delight in their little one. Grimes's verses describe the delightful sensations in store for the infant: "the satin of rose petals" and "-the glistening mystery/of soap bubbles." There's a stately joyfulness throughout, and, indeed, this work seems most geared to adults, particularly grandparents, who will relish the heartfelt sentiments and gorgeous illustrations.-Marilyn Taniguchi, Beverly Hills Public Library, CA Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.
Kirkus Reviews
Every child should be so blessed as to be welcomed to the world and into the loving embrace of an adoring family, as is the African-American newborn in this warm poetic picture book. The engaging text is filled with whispering sibilants, as in, "Welcome to robin song / and the swish of leaves in the breeze." Overall, Collier's signature eye-catching watercolor-and-collage illustrations are deeply appealing, particularly in the scenes featuring the infant's captivating open-mouthed, toothless smiles. Page-and-a-half spreads of deep color illustrate Grimes's joyful inventory of delights. However, the baby's face isn't always rendered consistently; one illustration shows it with an odd-shaped head, and in some drawings, balloon collages are distracting. Still, this is a reassuring charmer and a sure-to-be-welcomed paean to doting parents and their cherished newborns. (Picture book/poetry. 0-3)
