Overview

Combining the heart of her Newbery Honor-winning fiction and the spirit of her legendary Baby-Sitters Club series, Ann M. Martin introduces a timeless new series for girls.

Flora and Ruby do not want to move to Camden Falls. But they don't really have a choice -- their parents are dead and their grandmother, Min, is taking them in. It's strange to be in a new place. But luckily, it's a very welcoming place.
Min runs a sewing store, Needle & Thread, at the heart of Main Street in Camden Falls. There, Flora and Ruby become friends with Olivia, who likes to organize things, and Nikki, who lives on the wrong side of the tracks. Even if Flora and Ruby never expected it to, Camden Falls becomes their home . . . and its stories become a part of their stories.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly

Meyers's honeyed, youthful voice gives Martin's latest, the first in the Main Street series for middle-graders, the easygoing pace one might expect from the series' title. Eleven-year-old Flora and her younger sister Ruby are orphaned when their parents are killed in a car accident. Five months after the tragedy, the siblings move with their grandmother Min to her home in the sleepy small town of Camden Falls, Mass. As the family grieves and adjusts to new circumstances-"getting their life back in order"-listeners are taken along to meet interesting friends and neighbors in Camden Falls. Kind-hearted Min co-owns a sewing shop, Needle and Thread, and lives in one of eight connected row houses in a historic building-all fodder for the sort of diverse community interactions, budding friendships and dramas that are the stuff of many of the author's popular works. Unfortunately, Meyers's characterizations are uneven, in contrast to her solid, straight narrative passages. Ruby's voice is too babyish and whiny, and the girls' energetic new pal Olivia is given an affected child characterization that is equally grating. Her takes on some of the older town residents, as well as a boy with Down Syndrome are slightly more successful. A bonus author interview, in which she discusses her characters, series and career is included. Ages 9-up. (June)

Sisters Ruby and Flora have only just begun to cope with the death of their parents. Now their grandmother Min is uprooting them from their familiar town and transplanting them to Camden Falls. Min lives in a row house and Ruby and Flora quickly get to know her neighbors on Main Street. Olivia, their next-door neighbor, is around Ruby and Flora's age and they become friends. It is harder to get to know Nikki, who comes from a poor family and is hesitant to trust anyone. While Main Street is very different from Ruby and Flora's home, they quickly befriend their neighbors, from Robby, a teenage boy with Down Syndrome, to an older woman who works with Min and whom many of the children fear. While the story is a bit slow at times, the relationships are varied and help Ruby and Flora realistically cope with the loss of their parents. This book launches Ann M. Martin's new series "Main Street."
Kirkus Reviews
Orphans Flora and Ruby are moving in with Min, their maternal grandmother. Min lives in 350-year-old Camden Falls, Mass., a town filled with all sorts of people who are ready to embrace the girls. Min's friendly sewing-and-needlepoint shop is the heart of the girls' new world. Camden Falls, with its row houses, quirky characters and strong, level-headed women is almost a character itself. For such a small town, there is a dizzying array of folks: an older boy with Down's Syndrome, an abused girl, a woman with Alzheimer's, a forgetful elderly black man, a shoplifter, a cranky shop owner and a girl who lives with her widowed father. Girls who have outgrown Cynthia Rylant's Cobble Street Cousins will find the same familiar sense of community here, and they will forgive the saccharine tone, especially when the narrator slips into the second-person voice. They will long to know how the girls fare in fourth and sixth grade and will be able to find out soon: The second in the series arrives in August just in time for school. (Fiction. 8-12)

    A GREAT BOOK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Positives about the book would be that it was so cute how they all would work at the
grandmothers' store and are great friends. I also liked how it took place in Massachusetts. The
last thing I liked about the book was how they moved to the mom's old house and how Flora
found all these things left behind from her mother to help her remember her mother, and make her less sad.

Some negatives of the book would be that personally I like first person. Also I couldn't really understand the lesson of the book or tell what the point of the book was. Overall, though,I still found this book interesting.

The writing style of the author can be explained in many ways. Welcome to Camden Falls was clear and easy to read. Also I noticed it was told in third person. Lastly, the book was very straight forward in telling what was happening and how it happened. I liked the writing
style of the book, but I would rather it was told in first person.

For the recommendation of the book it sort of depends on what you like in a book. One reason I would say yes would be because it was interesting. I'd say no if you don't like sad books. Although it wasn't a complete series of sad events it was still a sad thought (the parents dying)Lastly I would recommend the book if you are the type of person that is curious and that likes finding things in books.

A similar novel would be Lily's Crossing, which is about a young girl whose mother died. Some novels I would recommend would be When You Reach Me, Absolutely Normal Chaos,
and The Upstairs Room. I would recommend these books, because they were mysterious and
made me curious, had a lesson in them, some were funny and they were all interesting.

Sorry For Those Who Loved It

I got this at a book fair. We got to see a video of what the book was about and stupid me didn't even bother to actually read part of it. So I got it and I couldn't stand it. It was sort of interesting, but I was completely disconnected from the characters and story line. I hate having to do this and review a book that I never even finished, but I just couldn't. I got to chapter three and basically sank. It was boring and annoying. It just sat there in my bookcase and has been sitting there for around 4 years. I finally found it and now I am giving it away. I didn't bother with the rest of the series. I'm sorry, this book isn't the book for me. Some may like it, but I was like in the 3rd or 4th grade and it was WAY too easy for me. I should have read some of it first. The characters seem so fictional and unrealistic. I just read the back right now and I wanted to fall asleep. I think the author could have done way better. I have always believed that a book needs to hook a reader right at the beginning, and this book didn't do that...and I just read the first sentence, and I started and just did not want to finish it! It was way too long, and way too boring...sorry again. Not the best book...=l I'm sorry Ms./Mrs. Martin... I didn't like it.

    Great book!

My daughter and I have read all 6 books and love them. We recommend you read book number one first. It explains who the girls are, how they got to Camden Fall and all about their neighbors and the Row Houses. My daughter can't wait until Book number 7 is released.

Reviewed by Marta Morrison for TeensReadToo.com

I really enjoyed reading the first book in the new MAIN STREET series by Ann M. Martin. I am glad that she is doing another series. I have many girls in my 5th-grade class who are still reading THE BABY-SITTERS CLUB and this new series is a little more timely.

It is the story of two sisters, Flora and Ruby, who lose their parents one night in a terrible car crash. Their grandmother picks up the pieces of their lives and they move to Camden Falls to live with her. Their grandmother owns a sewing shop and the girls help her out. There they meet two other girls -- Olivia, who lives next door and whose grandmother is co-owner of the shop, and Nikki, who is poor and lives on the wrong side of town.

Flora, Olivia, and Nikki are all in sixth grade and have the same teacher, and Ruby will be in fourth grade.

The author has made a simple story very contemporary by including many social issues that kids need to face each day. There is a family contending with Alzheimers Disease and another with downsizing. Flora is faced with trying to know who she is and who her parents were, there is a lady who has been in a concentration camp, another family who has a teen with Down Syndrome, and poverty. It is an intelligent and not watered down story.

I am looking forward to reading the next one in the series and introducing them to my class in the fall.

    A wonderful book

I would defintely recommend this book to you. This is a book about two sisters that have to live with their grandma because their parents died in a car accident. Now they have to start a new life in Camden Falls. Min,their grandma, owns a store called Needle and Thread. Flora, one of the sisters, loves to sew and likes to help out in Needle and Thread.Ruby, the other sister, likes to dance and sing in choruses. What I really like about it is that they have a website to help you understand where everything is and helps you learn more about the town. I really enjoyed this book and hopefully you will too.

    My Review

Main Street: Welcome to Camden falls is about two girls, Flora and Ruby. Flora'11 years old' is moody and never seems very happy, mostly beacuase of he parents dieing. Ruby'8 years old' is very entergetic and doesnt let sadness come to her. This book is about two girls who had to move with their grandmother beacause of the loss of their parents. They have to come to a new home and new neighbors. This book takes place in the fall in Camdan Falls. I would say that the theme of this story is bravery because Flora and Ruby have to be brave to come to a new place without ever seening their parents ever again. I liked this book because it is things that are happening today. I enjoyed reading parts with the cat King Comma. This was was first Main Street book that I have read, and i want to read more of them.

    Pretty Good

If you are moving or going through a tough time, this book is perfect for you. Flora and Ruby Northrop's parents died, and now they are moving to Camden Falls with their grandmother, Min. The girls aren't sure if they are ever going to feel at home. To see if the girls ever adjust to a new life, read Main Street-Welcome to Camden Falls by Ann M. Martin. If you like the book, keep your eye out for Main Street-Needle and Thread coming out in August 2007.
