Editorial Reviews

From The Critics
Using large photographs depicting tourist attractions, geography, wildlife, political personalities, and food, this volume offers an introduction to Germany for children. The guide also provides maps, a "Quick Facts" page, a glossary, and a resource page that lists books, websites, and videos. Readers will especially enjoy this good first look at a fascinating country rich in history and diversity. Part of the "Welcome To My Country" series. 2000, Gareth Stevens Publishing, $16.95. Ages 8 to 12. Reviewer: A. Braga SOURCE: Parent Council Volume 8
Children's Literature - Children's Literature
Germany is a country of over 82 million citizens. Geographically, it covers an area great enough to make it the third largest Western European nation. The Germans are, and have been, an industrious and robust group. Its citizens' efforts make Germany one of the leading economic forces in the world. Culturally, German writers, painters, and performing artists have had a leading place in Western thought since the Middle Ages. However, German history has been marked by horrible phases of imperialism, racism, and destruction. The German people have been participants in some of the noblest and most inhumane actions of the modern era. Since its inception in 1871 Germany, as a nation, has had a political evolution noteworthy for its fluctuations. Moving from Imperial Empire, to a post-World War I republic, then a Fascist Reich, and finally a democratic system, Germany has covered seemingly all polarities of government in 130 years. It is the story of this productive yet troubling country that is concisely told in this social studies text. Through a simplistic text and colorful photographs the reader is introduced to German history, culture, social practices, and family life. The story of the German people is presented within an overview that serves as a good jumping-off place for further study. Maps and statistics are included that highlight the various German states, population, and geography. A fair amount of space is dedicated to describing the German school system and various clubs available to children and adults. All in all this book provides a good introduction to Germany and the Germans. 2000, Gareth Stevens Publishing, Ages 8 to 10, $22.60. Reviewer: Greg M. Romaneck—Children's Literature
