Editorial Reviews

Using large photographs depicting tourist attractions, geography, wildlife, political personalities, and food, this volume offers an introduction to India for children. The guide also provides maps, a "Quick Facts" page, a glossary, and a resource list that includes books, websites, and videos. Readers will especially enjoy this good first look at a fascinating country rich in history and diversity. Part of the "Welcome To My Country" series. 2000, Gareth Stevens Publishing, $16.95. Ages 8 to 12. Reviewer: A. Braga SOURCE: Parent Council Volume 8

Part of the publisher's "Welcome to My Country" series, this volume contains much of the information and many of the same photographs, as in the corresponding book for older children in the "Countries of the World" series. Chapters on history, lifestyle, leisure and food offer as much of an overview of the vastness of India as one could possibly hope to give in 48 pages. It's surprising that in considering history, Lord Mountbatten and Mother Teresa both merit mini-profiles, but Gandhi and Nehru do not! A Quick Facts list and glossary are useful additions, as are a reading list, video and on-line resources. 2000, Gareth Stevens, Ages 7 to 10, $22.60. Reviewer: Uma Krishnaswami
