Overview

If the election of Barack Obama fills you with dread rather than elation, you're not alone; in fact, pull up a chair next to James Delingpole who has seen this all before and knows exactly where America is heading: into a morass of sprawling government that will slowly start suffocating our economy, our liberties, and our culture. You might as well call it socialism, he says, because that's what it is. In Britain it came in under the smiling face of Tony Blair and has left the British bulldog castrated, whimpering, and sick; in America it's coming under the vibrant, youthful guise of Barack Obama. But the result will be the same: the brave, independent American eagle will become the American turkey, oven-basted by the nanny state of Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, Nancy Pelosi, and Harry Reid.

James Delingpole, whose coruscating wit and laugh-out-loud asides have earned his fame as a British political commentator, is here to tell us how bad things could really get. From the socialized medicine that will make us want to avoid going to the doctor even when our hand is on fire (as his literally once was); to eco-fascism that will have us spending millions, if not billions, if not entirely ruining our already shattered economy, to protect un-endangered, man-eating polar bears; to immigration non-reform that will leave us wondering what country we're living in anyway; to a further dumbing down of an already execrable school system, with more PC inanities, such as banning "competitive games" because it might disturb children's self-esteem; to so many symptoms of decline and fall that we might as well all move to Albania to enjoy the high life.

Hilarious, witty, impassioned, andperceptive, Welcome to Obamaland will have you laughing through your tears and taking courage from the eternal truth of conservative convictions.

What People Are Saying

Andrew Roberts
"Totally brilliant. As funny as St. Mark Steyn."--(Andrew Roberts, historian and author of A History of the English-Speaking Peoples Since 1900)
Toby Young
"In 1997, Britain elected a young, charismatic, inspirational leader, and the entire nation was filled with hope. For the next ten years, we suffered the pain of gradual disillusionment as Tony Blair failed to live up to every single one of our expectations. Why not save yourselves the trouble of slowly having your hearts broken and fast forward straight to the bitter and cynical phase? James Delingpole, one of Britain's most astute political journalists, is here to give you a quick reality bath. He has seen the future--your future--and it doesn't work."--(Toby Young, author of How to Lose Friends and Alienate People)

Read an Excerpt

From Welcome to Obamaland

Think of me as the hero of H. G. Wells's The Time Machine, bursting into your present, my clothes all tattered and torn, and on my face an expression of dire horror and impending doom. For I am afraid I have a terrible message to impart. I have just seen the future. Your future. And I'm sorry to say it sucks.

This new president you've elected. You think he's going to make everything okay, right? Even if you didn't vote for him, you're kind of hoping that some good must surely come of it.

Ha ha ha ha ha. Ha ha ha ha ha.

That's the sound of me laughing darkly, by the way.

So what, if any, consolation do I have to offer you in these dark and difficult times? Precious little, I'm afraid. Virtually nothing in fact, save the warm, self-affirmatory glow you get when someone tells you you're right, that some day your beliefs will be vindicated, that however long it takes, reality will win out.

The best book I've read in 2009

As a Russian reader of this excellent book I could add to Mr. Delingpole's wise diagnosis my own one: I've seen it all too, long before Tony Blair became the first Western leader to hug our dear Comrade Putin! I've seen all the Obamaland charms not in Britain, but right here in Russia, where inept Government bureaucracy equals now more than 150 divisions, any freedom is strictly limited by "guardians of national interests", and any non-bureaucratic individual is utterly rightless. All this - with terabytes of happy words about social equality, naturally. I could add it - but I wouldn't. I do not possess neither Mr. Delingpole's enviable wit, nor his writing talent. I'd call "Welcome to Obamaland" not simply a very good book (we have lots of them around), but a very good fighting book (too few of them in our not so brave new world, alas!). I recommend it with all my heart (and with all my Obamaland-of-Russia experience, which is rather sad). Rostislav, Saint-Petersburg, Russia

    I Also Recommend:

indepth look into obamas questionable future

"welcome to obamaland" is a very well indepth bestseller that has been writtion by a well researched journalist and arthur james delingpole from the country of england and he gives a comparison and contrasts between obamas administration and future and englands socialitic economy. the writer having lived in his country of great britian sees intresting similarities between this administration and what is happening now and how his country worked with socialism. he clearly documents how obama and his associates are very much like goverment control of everything. this is a great gift idea for a friend or family member. great for a book club.

Made me laugh when lately all I want to do is cry!

Thank you, Mr. Delingpole for this book! I am so frustrated I can't stand it anymore! Although I am disgusted by our current predicament, the one painted in the book is infinitely more frightening. At least I know there are others feeling the way I do! After all, misery does indeed love company.

    One smart Brit!

This is a great book for any conservative who is feeling a bit helpless with the current state of the union. This book restates our deepest convictions and reinvigorates the confidence in our logic that is the backbone of those convictions. Written just before Obama's inauguration, Delingpole uses his home, the UK, as a parallel and predictor for what is to come under total Democrat control in the US. After just 4 months, it is amazing how many parallels are already visible from certain Obama initiatives to almost verbatim quotations to make us feel better about surrendering our individual rights for the benefit of the whole. A fascinating but still worrisome read. God help us.

    I Also Recommend:

A master of lies and racisim.

From the opening paragraph of "he is even a pleasent shade of brown like Tiger Woods" this book lays on the racisim and lies. It is really too bad that people form poltical opinions based on misinformation such as this book. Spare yourself the twenty something dollars and grab yourself a copy of The Audacity of Hope. Working together is what will make our future work.

    Great read!

The book is a great read by an author who, being a Brit, has the unique capability to look at Obama with an outsider's view and not "having a dog in the fight". It's well written and combines fact with humor. I found it to be totally enjoyable and refreshing.
