Then when the baby is born, her dad tells her that it's a boy named Isaac, and he has something called Down syndrome. As her dad shares this news, Emma senses his concern and wonders if Isaac will be able to go on all those adventures after all. While they talk, they come to the conclusion that he will certainly be able to do everything she's imagined. Finally she asks, "If Isaac has this Down thing, then what can't he do?" Her dad thinks about it, then tells her that as long as they are patient with him, and help him when he needs it, there probably isn't anything Isaac can't do.
In this touching story, Emma helps her father as much as he helps her to realize that Isaac is the baby they dreamed of. The book concludes with a set of commonly asked questions about Down syndrome with answers for children and how it might affect their sibling and family. The wonderful color illustrations help make We'll Paint the Octopus Red a beautiful, reassuring book for siblings of children with Down syndrome that's sure to become a family favorite.

This book is a very good book to read to children whose parents' are having/had a baby with Down syndrome. It talks about the feelings a child may have when they find out they are going to have a new brother or sister. It helps get a child excited about a new baby sister or brother with Down syndrome. It also shows readers all of the things a baby with Down syndrome can still do. In addition, the back of the book has a great question and answer section about Down syndrome.

This book is great, it has a wonderful section in the back where there are common questions about Down's Syndrome asked by children and gives some wonderful answers. The story in itself is touching and holds children's attention. A fabulous method of introducing the idea to children that there are some people who have different needs and talents, but that they are still members of society and can do (for the most part) what other children can do. There is also a glossary section to the book and the illustrations are fabulous. A great discussion starter, my students were so interested. Another method of introducing diversity to students as well.

WE'LL PAINT THE OCTOPUS RED WAS AN EXCEPTIONAL BOOK. PARENTS EXPECTING OR WHO HAVE HAD A CHILD WITH DOWN SYNDROME SHOULD READ PURCHASE THIS BOOK. IT REVEALS TO PARENTS THAT THEIR CHILD/SIBLING IS PART OF THEM AND IS A CHILD AND A MEMBER OF THEIR FAMILY.
