    Overview

Wellesley Wives is romantic comedy about Popsy Power, Boston society-wife, and her best friend Sandra. They have it all with adoring husbands and fabulous daughters. Rosie is married with a baby of her own and Lily has a glittering career. Life is incredibly good, but then it goes bad.

From Ferraris and fine art to a boathouse in Banagher, it's quite a change for the ladies who lunch. However, when Lily runs off with her father's best friend and Rosie finds herself on a yacht with another woman's husband, it's hardly surprising that their mother
    Wellesley Wives . . .

Popsy Power is pretty, popular, and insanely rich. Her husband adores her, and her two daughters are busy producing babies and romping up the corporate ladder-like good little Wellesley Wives. However, what Popsy doesn't know is that her husband and worldly wealth will soon be gone, and as for her daughters... Well, Lily's romping is not restricted to the boardroom, and Rosie finds her pilot-husband flying more than his jet.
Sandra is Popsy's best friend. She has the perfect body, bank balance, and palatial penthouse. As a second wife herself, she should know how husbands wander, but even she is shocked when she discovers where Jack has found his fun . . . When Lily's nasty, little secrets suddenly go public and Rosie finds her husband flying a little too high, it's time to escape.

Popsy and Sandra flee to beautiful, peaceful Ireland. Rosie heads to Mexico, and Lily seeks refuge in the arms of her man. The adventure continues for Popsy and Sandra. Within days, they're almost arrested and killed before finding themselves in a boathouse in Banagher-with jobs! Meanwhile Rosie is diving off the back of a catamaran into the azure-blue of the Caribbean, but she's not sure what's worse-the sharks in the sea or the ones on the beach. Back in Boston, Lily discovers that getting what she wanted was not what she wanted, but unlike her scuba diving sister, surely she's in too deep...

From Banagher to Boston and down to the Caribbean Sea, these four ladies are on a rollercoaster ride through life. Rich, poor, happy, sad, in or out of love-only one thing is certain. Things are is never dull when you're with the Wellesley Wives.

Wise Bear Books Reviews Wellesley Wives by Suzy Duffy -- 5 Paws!

Wise Bear Books Reviews Wellesley Wives by Suzy Duffy -- 5 Paws!

Romantic comedies rarely get the respect they deserve within the literary community.  Today's readers often assess the quality of books based largely on thrills, suspense and surprise plot twists.  Our cultural addiction to action-driven scenarios is so profound that many readers are willing to overlook poorly constructed stories and sub par writing as long as they get their vicarious adventure fix.

Wellesley Wives is a novel that reminds us that skilled writing and thoughtful character development can be as scintillating to readers as any over-exploited lethal explosion.  This isn't your typical romantic comedy as there are lots of real life experiences that many readers will find easily relatable—family, love, loss, money and much more.

At its core, Wellesley Wives is the story of four affluent women enmeshed and mired in their ostensibly perfect lifestyles.  This story could be set in any affluent American community or even middle class suburbia because money is only a device in the novel.  The real story is about the good, bad and sometimes ugly connection between four Wellesley women.

Popsy Power is a loving wife and mother of two grown daughters as well as one granddaughter.  Wellesley Wives begins with the celebration of Popsy's 50th birthday.  Readers are introduced to Popsy as her equally devoted husband, Peter, takes Popsy to pick out a brand new Ferrari as a gift.  We immediately understand our protagonist leads a charmed life many of us dream about and want for ourselves, but that's all about to change.  Popsy is the glue between the women and the novel's main plot line.

Sandra Hoffman is Popsy's slightly younger best friend and stereotypical second wife who is married to Jack Hoffman, Peter Power's business partner.  Sandra is a fitness addict, a runner to be precise, who has begun to question her childless marriage.  Knowing her husband is dead set against any additional children—he has three from a previous marriage with whom he has little to no contact—Sandra decides to take matters into her own hands.  Unbeknownst to Jack, she has discontinued birth control measures, but Sandra's bigger problem is her husband's disinterest in her overt sexual advances.

Rosie Power is Popsy's eldest daughter, mother to 5-year-old Natasha, and married to commercial airline pilot, Marcus.  They, too, seem to have an idyllic marriage and family, but for one thing—Marcus is adamant about reviving the former party girl in Rosie by visiting a swingers resort.  Although strongly opposed to her husband's experiment to open their marriage to new sexual experiences, she complies with his request for fear of losing him altogether.  Rosie suffers in silence until she lets news of their vacation destination slip during lunch with her younger sister, Lily, who she is asking to watch Natasha while they are gone.  Lily's strong opinions about Rosie's marriage lead Rosie to withdraw her request and instead ask her unaware mother, Popsy.

Ironically, Lily Power is not without secrets and should be the last person to lecture her older sister, as she is carrying on a scandalous affair of her own.  Lily conveniently chooses to ignore her own indiscretions until Rosie and Natasha make an unannounced visit to Lily's home and discover the object of Lily's desire.

The sisters seemingly have each other over a barrel and are obliged to keep each other's secrets, but all bets are off when little Natasha lets the cat out of the bag, triggering a chain of events with dire physical, emotional and financial repercussions.  Instantly, each of the women is torn from their all-too-perfect lives into confronting the realities of their new normal.

This is where the real story begins in Wellesley Wives.  With humor, emotion and grace, author Duffy crafts a poignant story about the interwoven lives of Popsy, Sandra, Rosie and Lily.  The story is long, but well-written narrative and lively dialogue keep the novel moving at a good pace.  Duffy isn't just a good writer, she's a darn good storyteller, too—a rare combination.

The primary and supporting characters are richly flawed and intriguing to follow in their respective journeys.  It's not that you won't see where Duffy's leading the story, but more that you won't care because the characters are that engaging and you'll want to power through to see how each plot line is resolved.

The author also does a nice job of taking the reader to various domestic, international and exotic locations, which is a testament to her descriptive abilities.  Each locale and respective settings are central to character development.  The mansions, the penthouses, the hotels and the vacations are symbolic to plot themes of love, family, friendship and ultimately self-realization.

Our main critical observation takes issue with the novel's cover.  Although the artwork is phenomenal, it's probably not the best representation of the book's storyline and general tone.  Be advised—Wellesley Wives is mostly a drama with appropriately infused humor.  In fact, the story is much more sophisticated than a run-of-the-mill romantic comedy, although it can certainly be considered part of the RomCom genre.

We highly recommend this book to readers of general and women's fiction as well as lovers of the lighter fare of Chick Lit for a 20s-something audience.  Wellesley Wives is a novel for women of all ages.  The story isn't just entertaining—there is much to be learned from following the highs and lows of these women from Wellesley.

      Review:

"Wellesley Wives" by Suzy Duffy was really some reading being a contemporary, women fiction-chick lit, with lots of drama and some humor. After reading this novel I had many thoughts...Wow, this was some read where two best friends 'manage to stay strong and support each other through dreadful, heart wrenching crises.' This novel is one of friendship, love and family where "the author gets inside their motivations and hearts, so that even if we deplore their actions, a part of us will under stands them and more importantly forgives them." When reading you will find yourself caught up where you will find a 'beautifully woven story about high-life, friendship, love, loss, cheating, lying, marriage and second chances.' Wow, Ms. Duffy you are simply a wonderful storyteller! "Wellesley Wives" will have you laughing while still leaving you sobbing chapter after chapter. I found all of the characters were strong and were well developed in tough situation that would definitely keep you turning the pages until the end. What a local .... Wellesley, MA. that this author wrote her setting from. No, I am not from Wellesley, however this book was published on Sept 27th...which is my birthday! And yes, I would recommend "Wellesley Wives" as a good read.

What would you say to the life where you can have as many expens

What would you say to the life where you can have as many expensive lunches and dinners you want, where you can go out to the most exotic vacations, where you have the gorgeous families and the best husbands and where the most common way of transport is Ferrari? Picture perfect? Hardly! Popsy and Sandra are not just friends but soul mates who stayed by each other’s side not only in thick and thin but also when one wrong step by Popsy’s daughter Lily shattered their lives. These are the women who had been there when Popsy’s other daughter Rosie is almost on the verge of losing it all. These are the women who are still rooting for each other when their enviously beautiful life has fall apart piece by piece. It’s beautifully woven story about high-life, friendship, love, loss, cheating, lying, marriage and second chances. This book will make you laugh and also leave you sobbing chapter after chapter. Fabulous locations, strong characters and toughest situation, this book has everything to make you turn pages.

      great book!

I received an Advanced Reader’s Copy of Wellesley Wives directly from the publisher. I absolutely adored this book and the characters. It reminded me of several of my favorite authors all rolled up into one. I love the author’s writing style and her humor, I found it very difficult to put this book down and I read it rather quickly. The characters could be equivalent to one of the Real Housewives show or a well-to-do group of well off people in the Hamptons. I love how all of the characters intermingle and the author makes you feel like you are right there with them. The characters seem so with it and then a series of unfortunate events tries to throw a wrench in the mix. I love how the main characters rise above and prevail during the low points. The main characters should hate each other over the series of circumstances that occur, but in the end, this only makes them stronger. I wish I was reading this book with a glass of wine in my hand at the beach, would have made it perfect. I will now add this book to my favorite chick lit books and would look forward to more books by this author.
